The Pediatric Triage Nurse Supervisor (RN) is a registered nurse who provides both clinical and operational leadership for the pediatric triage program. This position is responsible for overseeing a team of pediatric triage nurses and ensuring high-quality, evidence-based telephone triage services are delivered to patients and families. The Supervisor will spend approximately 50% of their time performing direct triage duties and 50% on administrative responsibilities, including staff supervision, scheduling, performance evaluation, workflow optimization, and quality assurance.

Clinical Responsibilities (Approximately 50%)- Provide direct telephone triage for pediatric patients and families using established clinical protocols, evidence-based guidelines, and critical nursing judgment.
- Assess patient symptoms, determine acuity, and recommend appropriate levels of care (e.g., home care, clinic visit, urgent/emergent care).
- Offer clear, compassionate education and instructions to caregivers, ensuring comprehension and adherence to recommended care.
- Document all triage encounters accurately, timely, and in accordance with organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and best practices.
- Serve as a clinical resource and escalation point for triage nurses who need additional support or guidance.
- Maintain current knowledge of pediatric clinical guidelines, triage standards, and organizational protocols.
- Oversee daily operations of the pediatric triage program to ensure efficient workflow, appropriate staffing levels, and timely response to patient calls.
- Develop and maintain triage protocols, workflows, and policies in collaboration with clinical leadership.
- Monitor call volumes, wait times, and triage outcomes to ensure program effectiveness and operational performance.
- Identify operational issues or gaps and implement solutions to improve service delivery.
- Supervise pediatric triage nursing staff, providing coaching, mentorship, and professional support.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations, competency assessments, and ongoing professional development planning.
- Coordinate new staff onboarding, orientation, and training on triage protocols, electronic systems, and workflow processes.
- Facilitate regular team meetings, communication updates, and case review sessions.
- Foster a positive team culture that emphasizes collaboration, accountability, and high-quality patient care.
- Lead quality assurance activities, including call audits, chart reviews, and evaluation of triage accuracy and protocol adherence.
- Track quality metrics and develop improvement plans in alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
- Support patient safety initiatives, risk management processes, and incident follow-up as needed.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA, state nursing regulations, and internal policies.
- Develop and manage staff schedules to ensure adequate triage coverage during all operational hours.
- Coordinate PTO requests, shift changes, emergency coverage, and call-out procedures.
- Maintain accurate staffing and productivity records; prepare reports and data summaries for leadership as needed.
- Collaborate with other clinical departments to support integrated care and seamless communication across teams.
Qualifications:
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license.
- Minimum 3–5 years of pediatric nursing experience; triage experience required
- Previous leadership, supervisory, or charge nurse experience desired.
