Materials Engineer, Quality Engineering
Position Summary:
This coatings technician position is located at the University of Dayton Research Institute with the Materials Degradation Group's Coating Technology Team. This position concentrates on the operation and maintenance of the exposure test cabinets such as salt spray, humidity and Xenon-arc chambers for accelerated exposure testing of material; conducting material testing methods and protocols; layout of laboratory test matrices and daily schedules based upon approved test plans;
maintenance and troubleshooting of exposure test cabinets and associated equipment as required; and performance of other laboratory coating exposures and testing.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Knowledge of techniques and equipment used in exposure testing and corrosion measurement/mitigation
- Minimum of 3 years hands‑on experience with coating applications and demonstrated proficiency in coating removal, pretreatment, and coating applications
- Working knowledge of various coating materials for aerospace applications
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and Word
- Must be a U.S. citizen due to the requirements of research contracts with the U.S. federal government
- Experience with military aerospace coating application on aircraft (de‑painting process, pretreatment, organic coating application) and qualitative interpretation of coating performance per ASTM standard methods
- Working knowledge of coating test methods, techniques and equipment used to evaluate coatings and corrosion exposures (adhesion, color, gloss, evaluation for corrosion per military requirements)
- Experience with composite and metallic aircraft structure surface preparation and coating application
- Experience with ISO 17025 laboratory requirements
