Press Brake Operator I – Sheet Metal – 2nd Shift

A shop hourly position with the primary responsibilities of operating two major pieces of equipment in the sheet metal department. This includes the efficient start‑up, production, and shut down of all assigned equipment.
As a senior mechanic, the Operator I is an influencer who leads junior mechanics or teams as assigned, trains and mentors junior mechanics, and assists department leadership with daily assignments. The purpose of every position at BAC, regardless of department or level, can be summed up as doing the right thing in the right way.
Responsibilities- Own personal and team safety; observe all safety rules and use proper safety equipment.
- Operate two major pieces of equipment to maximize productivity and quality.
- Sign off daily and weekly on primary maintenance procedure checklists.
- Uphold and support quality and process standards.
- Execute workload in line with department scrap reduction goals.
- Train and guide junior mechanics.
- Provide leadership in the absence of the Station Lead and/or Team Leader.
- Understand departmental metrics and communicate or interpret them for junior mechanics.
- Update and post metrics as assigned.
- Complete paperwork or online data entry required by the department.
- Document processes for knowledge capture and training of junior mechanics.
- Maintain 5S standards in the department.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities and projects.
- Contribute to departmental safety improvements and initiatives.
- Produce to the highest quality standards and instruct junior mechanics on precise quality practices.
- Engage in sustainable practices to reduce environmental impact and waste.
- Support innovation by developing and implementing new ideas that improve processes, methods, systems, or services.
- Perform other duties as assigned by plant leadership.
- Qualified in operating major fabrication machines, including Laser, CNC, and Press Brake.
- Demonstrated ability to lead small groups.
- Effective written and oral communication; ability to document processes and communicate them clearly.
- Excellent knowledge of the sheet metal FAST program.
- Ability to read and interpret drawings and blueprints.
- High product knowledge of BAC’s models and parts.
- Competent in math, including basic calculations and fractional conversions.
- Ability to use hand‑held measuring tools such as tape measure, micrometer, and protractor.
- Good knowledge of basic maintenance and troubleshooting techniques.
- Minimum of one year experience as a sheet metal fabricator.
- Knowledge of continuous improvement tools and ability to support root cause analysis for quality issues.
- Thorough knowledge of hazards related to cranes, fixtures, and safety‑sensitive areas.
- Demonstrated commitment to safety and adherence to safety standards.
- Computer competency with MS Excel and MS Access, including updating data and generating metrics.
- Flexibility to work at multiple department work stations and adapt to change.
- Ability to work on cross‑functional teams to support plant objectives.
The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs, standing roughly 80% of the time, and performing walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and sitting. Fine hand manipulation and hand‑eye coordination are needed to operate controls. Working hours may include any of three shifts, scheduled for forty hours per week, with occasional weekend overtime. Temperature may vary widely within the plant and outside.
