Job Description Position Goal

To provide interpreting/transliterating services rendering the message faithfully, both receptively and expressively, conveying the content and the spirit of the speaker using the language most readily understood by the person(s) whom they serve.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Interpret/transliterate expressively and receptively for students who are deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) or dual sensory impaired in all aspects of the educational process. Possible interpreting/transliterating assignments may include:
    • All classroom activities, including lectures, discussions, small group work, questions, answers, media presentations and teacher/student conferring
    • Any counseling sessions, diagnostic evaluations, discipline situations, and school assemblies
    • Any school‑related activities in which the student(s) who are DHH or dual sensory impaired are required to attend
    • Tutoring sessions, during normal working hours or as arranged by the teacher of the DHH or the general education teacher
  • Work cooperatively with all members of the educational team including ESE teachers, general educational teachers and students who are DHH or dual sensory impaired
  • Facilitate communication between the students who are DHH or dual sensory impaired and classroom teacher(s) as required
  • Follow all federal, state and district guidelines for standardized test procedures for students who are DHH or dual sensory impaired
  • Establish in conjunction with the classroom teacher a physical setting within the classroom for appropriate communication interaction
  • Collaborate with appropriate teacher(s), regarding needs of the student(s) who are DHH or dual sensory impaired
  • Prepare for interpreting assignments by studying content areas, lesson plans, outlines, etc. when interpreting services are not required
  • Attend all in‑service programs and staff meetings as directed by the principal, instructional specialist, or designee
  • Maintain confidentiality concerning all personal and academic information about students
  • Exhibit an interest for increased knowledge and self‑improvement in interpreting and the exceptional education process
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Instructional Specialist, Speech/Language or designee

    Required Qualifications
    • Basic Level – High School Diploma, G.E.D., or equivalent (No level or certification required)
      • Attend and successfully complete fifteen (15) hours of in‑service training per year
      • Willing to attend on‑the‑job training for site assignment as needed
    • Apprentice – Six (6) hours of college credit from an accredited institution of higher education
      • Hold and maintain at least a valid Educational Interpreter Evaluation (EIE) or Quality Assurance (QA) Level 1 or Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) Level 2.5 or greater, or a passing score on the Oral Transliteration Certificate (OTC) written exam, or Cued Language Transliterator National Certification Examination (CLTNCE) / EIPA‑CS or any higher Registry of Interpreters (RID) certification
      • Attend and successfully complete fifteen (15) hours of in‑service training per year
    • Provisional – Twelve (12) hours of college credit from an accredited institution of higher education or approved RID Alternative Pathway
      • Hold and maintain at least a valid EIE or QA Level 2 or EIPA Level 3 or greater or a passing score on the OTC written exam or CLTNCE / EIPA‑CS or any higher RID certification
      • Attend and successfully complete fifteen (15) hours of in‑service training per year
    • Provisional + 36 – Thirty‑six (36) hours of college credit from an accredited institution of higher education or approved RID Alternative Pathway
      • Hold and maintain at least a valid EIE or QA Level 3 or EIPA Level 3 or CLTNCE / EIPA‑CS or any higher RID certification
      • Attend and successfully complete fifteen (15) hours of in‑service training per year
