The Indirect Tax Manager is responsible for managing the indirect tax return compliance, accounting and reporting functions, including sales and use, GST, property, and other transactional taxes at the corporate office.
Responsibilities- Compliance and Reporting:
Manages the timely and accurate preparation and filing of all indirect returns (sales/use tax, GST, excise, property and gross receipts). Reconciles tax work papers used as support for tax filings to the general ledger. Oversees accuracy of sales tax license registrations resulting from mergers and acquisitions or divestitures. - Tax Accounting and Reporting:
Oversees indirect tax accounting, including accruals, true‑ups, and reconciliation for sales and use tax, and other indirect taxes. Ensures indirect tax balances are accurately reflected in the general ledger and financial statements. Supports month‑end and quarter‑end close process related to indirect taxes. Assists with disclosure requirements and footnote support related to indirect tax exposure and contingencies. Coordinates with auditors and provides audit support, including roll forwards, reconciliations and documentation. - Team Management:
Supervises, mentors, and develops tax team members. Oversees month‑end checklist for completeness and timely task completion. Maintains the team training binder, ensuring processes are documented and kept current. - Audits & Correspondence:
Facilitates indirect and property tax audits, inquiries, and correspondence from tax authorities. Prepares and reviews responses, coordinates documentation, and negotiates resolutions. - Process & Systems Improvement:
Identifies opportunities for process improvements and facilitates implementation of technology solutions to streamline tax processes, increase efficiency and enhance controls. Collaborates with technical consultants to update and improve configurations as required. - Advisory &
Collaboration:
Provides indirect tax guidance and training to internal stakeholders, including finance, legal, IT, and operations on the tax implications of business transactions and new initiatives. - Research & Special Projects:
Monitors changes in tax laws and regulations across state and local jurisdictions and assesses impact on the company’s business operations and systems. Performs special projects for management and routinely conducts required tax research. Monitors and validates the completion of tax affidavits relating to material costs, sales tax adjustments, or exempt projects. Facilitates setup, retention, and submission of exemption certificates for suppliers and customers. - Other duties as assigned.
- Minimum Degree: BS/BA in Accounting (curriculum must include 4 years of accounting).
- CPA or Special Tax Certifications – Indirect Tax (IPT I or II course completion, etc.) a plus.
- Typically requires a minimum of 5‑8 years of experience in indirect tax compliance and advisory.
- With 2‑3 years in a managerial capacity, demonstrating the ability to lead teams.
- Work history to include diverse transactions in a large corporate environment or comparable work for a large public accounting firm. Multi‑state sales tax registrations, tax return preparation, compliance and reporting, automated system configurations, and experience with corporate mergers and acquisitions.
