Job Overview
The County of Volusia is seeking an Intern for the Emergency Management Division. This is a temporary (20 hours per week) position located in Daytona Beach, Florida. The intern will review, design, and develop projects, studies, and objectives such as emergency operational plans and assist the county and its residents in mitigating, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters.
Unpaid internship for college credit only. The internship is in‑person, not virtual. Positions are posted continuously and may be filled for fall, spring, or summer based on the time of year. Temporary positions do not receive County benefits.
Responsibilities- Review Health Care Facility emergency operations plans.
- Design and facilitate tabletop and operational exercises.
- Develop and deliver public outreach presentations.
- Assist county‑wide stakeholders in developing emergency operations plans and continuity of operations plans.
- Assist with community organizations active in disasters.
- Provide outreach and emergency preparedness assistance to private schools.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Attend work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
- Respond to emergency situations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Be enrolled in an accredited college or university as a full‑time undergraduate student (Fall/Spring – 12 credit hours; Summer – 6 credit hours) or full‑time graduate student (Fall/Spring – 9 credit hours; Summer – 6 credit hours).
- Be currently seeking a degree in an area of study related to the internship position.
- Be able to work four (4) to six (6) hours per day, three (3) times per week, for at least twelve (12) weeks during the assigned internship.
- Undergraduate students must maintain a 2.8 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale; graduate students must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.
- Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire.
- Must be willing to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Political Science, Homeland Security, Public Administration, Public Management, Supervision and Management, International Studies, Emergency Management, Graphic Design, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Knowledge of basic computer skills.
- Knowledge of basic customer service skills.
- Ability to develop and facilitate exercises.
- Ability to structure, research, and develop emergency plans.
- Ability to educate the public about disaster preparedness.
- Ability to work with community stakeholders in emergency management and disaster preparedness.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, supervisors, volunteers, and the public.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to interact effectively with others.
Physical Requirements
Physical:
Sedentary work. Ability to see, talk, and use finger dexterity. Major visual functions are acuity, far and near, field of vision, and accommodation. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) are necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.
Environmental:
General inside work.
Mental:
Ability to read and comprehend technical and professional journals and manuals, reports, abstracts, statistical data, legal documents, perform mathematical functions, speak publicly, and analyze data to develop conclusions.
