Your Specific Responsibilities

This position serves as an OPS Environmental Specialist I and works under the general supervision of the Environmental Health Program Consultant, position #, Florida Department of Health in Volusia County, and provides professional support and technical assistance to staff, community agencies, and the general public. The incumbent serves in the Onsite Sewage Treatment and Disposal Systems (OSTDS) program and is assigned to the Orange City Environmental Public Health office.

  • Conducts annual inspections pertaining to operating permits for aerobic treatment units.
  • Reviews files for aerobic treatment units for completeness and accuracy.
  • Conducts abandonment inspections.
  • Conducts database entries, generating reports and workflow processes.
  • Assists with establishing and maintaining field office files.
  • Conducts annual inspections of service trucks.
  • Conducts nuisance complaint investigations to determine if a sanitary nuisance is present.
  • Time sheet and EAR entry within the required time frame.
  • Subject to emergency duty in the event of a natural disaster.
  • Completion of all mandatory or assigned trainings within the required time frame.
  • Attends meetings, and agency team projects as assigned.
  • Assists other programs with inspections, as needed.
  • Performs other duties and special projects, as assigned.
  • Participates in departmental quality improvement and health equity efforts. Attends meetings and agency team projects as assigned.
  • Assists with permit application processing and review, record filing, and archiving.
  • Assists within other Environmental Public Health programs, as assigned.
  • Assists with data entry of sampling reports.
  • Responds to terrorism or natural disaster events and public health emergencies as assigned.
  • Assists with the investigation and evaluation of suspected water-borne illness complaints/outbreaks.
  • May work in disaster shelters during emergencies, as assigned.
  • Performs other duties, as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of data collection, analysis principles and procedures, laws, rules, and procedures associated with environmental public health. Knowledge of principles and techniques of effective communication.

  • Skilled in operating common environmental health field testing equipment and ancillary inspection equipment such as computers.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with staff, customers, contractors, other agencies and the public.
Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Must be willing to physically come in the office to perform the duties & responsibilities of the positions.
  • Must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
  • Must have a bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university with a major in one of the physical or natural sciences or public health.
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat, humidity and other inclement weather elements.
  • Must be willing to drive your personal vehicle to conduct inspections.
Preferred
  • Knowledge of OSTDS program operating procedures.
  • Skilled in performing quality septic inspections.
  • Ability to operate electronic field sampling /testing/collection equipment and associated computers and software.
