Job DescriptionManages multiple priorities effectively and meets registry established deadlines by balancing time between leading the team and performing abstractions. Seeks opportunities to maintain clinical expertise and incorporates latest developments and trends related to the cancer registry and national clinical guidelines by attending educational, registry, or other conferences and training. Assists leadership in hiring and recruitment process. Other duties as assigned. Supervises registry personnel, reviews quality assurance reports, monitors productivity, and provides performance feedback.
Ensures timely, accurate, and complete data reporting to appropriate authorities and institutions. Serves as a point of contact for the assigned team to answer questions related to abstracting and coding activities, and facilitates small group huddles to foster open communication and team growth. Participates in special projects or initiatives to improve the quality and outcomes for patients. Adheres to hospital policy for protecting patient confidentiality per HIPAA guidelines.
Demonstrates thorough understanding of medical terminology related to anatomy, physiology, oncology, pathology, radiology, and cancer treatment modalities. Interprets components of a patient’s medical history, including radiology and pathology reports, operative reports, history and physical reports, physician and nurses’ notes, discharge summaries, treatment protocol descriptions, and physician’s letters. Abstracts reportable cases with regards to timeliness and quality as specified in the quality assurance policy.
Skills, and Abilities
- Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of reference manuals, materials, and notices used to ensure quality data and compliance with FCDS, CoC, Advent Health Cancer Registry standards
- Technical qualifications including knowledge of the disease process, diagnostic methods and procedures, composition of the health record, data interpretation, and statistical and analytical skills
- Skilled in the use of the following standardized coding instructions and rules:
Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Solid Tumor Multiple Primary and Histology rule set, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Coding Manual and Database, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) RX - Interactive Drug Database, Commission on Cancer's Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE) Manual, FCDS to state mandated data systems - Proficiency with computerized cancer registry databases, word processing software, and windows-based operating system
- Knowledge of ACoS/CoC and state registry data collection requirements; able to accurately interpret components of medical record including operative, pathology, radiology, lab, and autopsy reports
- Up-to-date knowledge of abstracting processes, principles, and data standards
- Up-to-date knowledge of characteristics of different types of cancers, including typical disease progression, relative prognoses, and standards of care
- Up-to-date knowledge of the Quality Measures as specified by the Commission on Cancer
- Up-to-date knowledge of on a site by site basis of the evidence-based NCCN Guidelines for cancer care
- Proficiency with electronic medical records, computerized cancer registry databases, word processing software, and windows-based operating system
Associate [Required]
Field Of Studyin Healthcare or Health Information Management
Work Experience- 2+ abstracting experience in a coc approved cancer program [Preferred]
- 3+ direct experience working as a certified tumor registrar [Required]
- Supervisory experience in cancer registry or related field [Preferred]
- Oncology Data Specialist (ODS) [Required]
Physical Requirements -
Pay Range$26.08 - $48.50
