Position Overview
The main responsibility of the CNC Lathe Machinist is to set up and operate CNC lathes to manufacture complex and non‑complex parts while maintaining high quality standards and workmanship. The role also involves keeping the work area and equipment safe, clean, and organized.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Set up and operate CNC lathes and 2‑axis conversational programming, with live tooling & subspindle.
- Write and edit complex lathe programs.
- Verify calibration of measuring equipment and use manual measuring tools.
- Ensure dimensional and quality requirements of components.
- Operate manual lathes and milling machines as needed.
- Assist with general housekeeping of the shop.
- Wear PPE and ensure all employees and visitors adhere to safety guidelines.
- Communicate with engineers and planners daily to keep routers and schedules accurate.
- Identify and implement ways to reduce set‑up times and update schedules accordingly.
- Mentor and train employees.
- Participate in Lean processes, working with Planning, Quality, Peers, and Engineering to improve flow.
- Identify potential cost reductions in product design and communicate them to Leads and Engineering.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- 1–2 years of experience in Manual Lathe and Mill operation.
- 3–5 years of experience in CNC Lathe operation.
- Experience in an Engineer‑to‑order Make‑to‑Order shop environment.
- Experience or training in Lean Manufacturing principles.
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to read and understand blueprints.
- Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Working knowledge of MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Capability to set up a machine and run the job with no supervision.
- Commitment to high quality standards and continuous improvement.
- Knowledge of precision measuring tools and calibration cycles.
- Support and assist with machine PM program.
- Understanding of lathe programming languages.
- Knowledge of all machine hazard areas.
