Purpose

The purpose of this classification, under general supervision, is to perform skilled work in locating mains, valves, and other underground utility equipment for the City of Daytona and all other utility service providers. Employees in this classification are responsible for shutting down broken mains and valves. Performs related work as required.

Drug Screening

NOTE:
This position (CDL required; Leisure Services; and/or safety sensitive) requires a drug screen. If applicant did not receive drug screening upon initial hire with the City; applicant will be required to submit to drug screening prior to accepting this position.


Education, Training, and Experience
High school diploma or GED supplemented by minimum 3 years previous experience and/or training that involves installation, repair, and maintenance of water lines, mains, and related services, to include familiarity in utilities locating with electronic underground locating equipment; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform essential job functions.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "B".

Job Description
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Locates City underground water mains, sewer lines, stormwater lines, reuse lines, and valves for the city, public, and private utility service providers and private contractors.

Locates laterals, meters, and leaks for City crews using specialized technical locating equipment.

Checks chlorine levels; shuts down broken water mains valves and fire hydrants.

Works collaboratively with engineering and consulting engineers concerning utility locating for construction and engineering projects.

Coordinates water mains shut down and oversees the repair of lateral breaks.

Flushes City fire hydrants.

Verifies new water installations.

Functions on call for response to emergencies.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information such as maps, diagrams, water/wastewater system plans, and blueprints.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division and calculate decimals and percentages

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.

Situational Reasoning
:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness, and creativity required in situations involving a variety of generally predefined duties that are often characterized by frequent change.

Physical Ability
:
Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20 to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).

Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.

Environmental Factors
:
Tasks may risk exposure to extremes in temperature and weather conditions dirt, dusts, pollen, traffic hazards, wetness, humidity, strong odors and/or smoke, and strong and/or toxic agents/chemicals.
