The purpose of this classification, under general supervision, is to operate a wide variety of heavy trucks, complex automotive equipment, and/or machinery. Employees in this classification operate all other trucks, equipment, and/or machinery as directed. Position performs highly skilled work and generally functions as part of the work crew in completing construction and/or water utility projects for the City. Position is responsible for operating such equipment as applicable to assigned department.
Performs related work as required.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, & EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or GED equivalent; supplemented by minimum two (2) years previous experience and/or training involving safe and effective operation of one or more of the heavy and/or complex equipment items listed herein, a portion of which will preferably be acquired at the Operator III level; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of and the ability to maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class "A".
JOB DESCRIPTION
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive
or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates heavy type graders in grading, blading, and smoothing roads and cutting slopes and new grades to fine measurements and specifications.
Operates other graders, tractor mounted backhoes, heavy transport vehicles, and/or boom mowers, as applicable to assigned department.
Operates a gradall or hydraulic excavator, loading and unloading gravel, asphalt, shell and dirt, and cleaning ditches and canals for drainage.
Operates heavy cranes, trucks, flatbeds, tanks, steel/rubber wheel rollers and/or tandem dump trucks in transporting of personnel, tools, equipment and/or materials, as applicable to assigned department.
Operates tractors equipped with stump cutters, street brooms, etc., as applicable to assigned department.
Operates truck mounted equipment and machinery such as bucket hoists, hydraulic cranes and pressure and chemical sprayers, as applicable to assigned department.
May operate a variety of small equipment such as jackhammers, concrete saws, chain saws, skill saws, edgers, wet dry vacuums, etc., as applicable to assigned department.
Observes safe and proper operating procedures when operating equipment, machinery, and/or tools, in accordance with established and prescribed standards.
Performs routine cleaning, maintenance, fueling, and/or servicing of assigned equipment, machinery, and/or tools to maintain safe and proper operating condition.

Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties that are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability:
Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Environmental Factors:
Tasks may risk exposure to extremes in temperature and weather conditions, dusts, pollen, strong odors and/or smoke, and strong and/or toxic agents/chemicals.
