JOB SUMMARY

The Trash Truck Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining refuse collection vehicles and related equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient fleet operations. This position performs preventative maintenance, mechanical repairs, hydraulic system repairs, electrical troubleshooting, welding, fabrication, and equipment inspections on rear loaders, front loaders, roll‑off trucks, automated side loaders, and support vehicles.

Pay: $22-$24

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform preventative maintenance services on refuse trucks and fleet vehicles.
  • Diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, suspensions, steering systems, and drive trains.
  • Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair hydraulic systems, pumps, cylinders, valves, hoses, and PTO systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical systems, wiring, lighting, sensors, and control components.
  • Repair and maintain compacting equipment, cart tippers, hoists, and lifting mechanisms.
  • Conduct DOT inspections and ensure vehicles meet all safety requirements.
  • Perform welding, cutting, and fabrication repairs as needed.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance and repair records.
  • Respond to breakdowns and emergency repair situations.
  • Keep the shop clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
  • Operate tools, diagnostic equipment, forklifts, and other shop equipment safely.
  • Communicate repair needs and equipment status to management and drivers.
  • Assist with inventory management and ordering of parts and supplies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of diesel engine repair and preventative maintenance practices.
  • Understanding of hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to read service manuals, schematics, and technical diagrams.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Ability to weld and fabricate metal components.
  • Ability to work independently and prioritize repairs effectively.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to stand, bend, kneel, climb, and work in various weather conditions.
  • Ability to work around heavy equipment, machinery, grease, and hydraulic systems.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power tools, and shop equipment.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience repairing heavy‑duty diesel trucks and refuse equipment preferred.
  • Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred.
  • Welding and hydraulic repair experience preferred.
  • Ability to pass company‑required background, drug, and safety requirements.
