T
he purpose of this classification, under general supervision, is to perform semi-skilled labor in a variety of tasks for constructing, maintaining, and repairing the municipal water systems including the City's advanced metering infrastructure; read, maintain, and trouble shoot metering devices and AMI/AMR components; and perform service requests as scheduled. Employees in this classification may function in one or more of the areas listed herein depending on assignment.
Performs related work as required.
Education, Training, and Experience
High School diploma or GED; supplemented by a minimum of three (3) months experience and/or training that involves any installation; operation; repair; and/or maintenance of a utility system including sanitary sewage collection; potable water distribution; or equipment operation systems of a water and/or wastewater treatment system. Other mechanical; electrical or construction experience will be considered.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of and ability to maintain valid Florida Driver's License. AMI/AMR experience preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Exemplifies excellent customer service.
Assists in locating City underground water meters.
Verifies existence and location of pipes; traces and inspects condition of laterals.
Repairs leaks, main breaks, faulty valves and metering devices (such as touch read registers, MXUs etc.).
Performs connections and disconnections as required or directed. Installs new meters, valves, meter boxes and AMR components.
Performs a variety of manual labor tasks in preparing work sites (i.e. excavation, asphalt/concrete cutting, loading and unloading materials).
Participates in ensuring proper traffic device placement and safety precautions are adhered to prior to commencing with work orders; participates in traffic control bottling water and special events activities.
Restores work sites upon completion of tasks (i.e. replacing dirt fill, asphalt, concrete, landscaping).
Performs general maintenance tasks when applicable to assigned area (i.e. cleaning culverts and ditches).
Responsible for maintenance of tools, parts, vehicle, and supplies inventory when applicable to area of assignment; may operate various light and heavy equipment.
Functions on call for response to emergencies.

Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools and/or materials used in performing essential functions.
Verbal Aptitude:
Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of descriptive data and information such as maps, diagrams, plans, etc. concerning water/wastewater systems.
Mathematical Aptitude:
Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Functional Reasoning:
Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Involves semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action.
Situational Reasoning:
Requires the ability to exercise the judgment decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving a variety of generally predefined duties that are often characterized by frequent change.
ADA COMPLIANCE
Physical Ability:
Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing but typically also involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20 to 50 pounds) and occasionally heavier objects and materials (up to 100 pounds).
Sensory Requirements:
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate sounds. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate depths. Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination.
Environmental Factors:
Tasks may risk exposure to extremes in temperature and weather conditions dirt, dusts, pollen, traffic hazards, wetness, humidity, strong odors and/or smoke and strong and/or toxic agents/chemicals.
