This is a seasonal, part-time, hourly position established to provide additional staffing support during the City's summer tax collection season.

July 5, 2026 through August 31, 2026
Hours:
Not to exceed twenty-eight (28) hours per week
Compensation:
Hourly rate of $17 per hour
This position is temporary in nature and does not create an expectation of continued employment beyond the seasonal assignment period.
Job SummaryWork is performed under the direction of the Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer. The Seasonal Part-Time Tax Clerk/Bookkeeper will process incoming monies from individuals, businesses, mortgage companies, and local, state, and federal government entities. This position assists with the City's tax collection process during peak tax season by processing tax payments, balancing cash receipts, preparing deposits, maintaining records, and providing customer service to taxpayers.
Employees of the City are required to serve citizens and customers in a tactful, courteous manner and establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, directors, elected officials, and the general public.
- Accepts money transactions from customers.
- Processes all incoming monies from individuals, local, state, and federal government agencies.
- Enters money transactions into computerized cash registers and financial systems.
- BALANCES all money transactions daily on an individual basis and through computerized register reports.
- Prepares daily cash reports reflecting all monies collected, categorizing according to account, bank, and balancing to reports.
- Operates computer systems to receive and generate reports.
- Prepares bank deposits and advance deposits.
- Counts and bundles money.
- Sorts and distributes Treasurer's Office mail to office personnel.
- Answers phones, works the public counter, performs filing duties, and completes other related clerical tasks.
- Prepares receipts and correspondence for mailing to customers.
- Notifies supervisors of errors, discrepancies, or equipment malfunctions.
- Verifies and processes current tax bills for individuals, banks, and mortgage companies during tax season.
- Verifies, calculates interest, and processes delinquent tax bills.
- Assists taxpayers with questions regarding tax bills, payments, penalties, and office procedures.
- Performs data entry, copying, scrolling, and record maintenance.
- Assists with large volumes of tax payments during peak collection periods.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- Exposed to indoor working conditions with occasional temperature fluctuations.
- Frequent interaction with the public during peak tax collection periods.
- Uses tools and equipment relative to the position, including computers, cash registers, telephones, calculators, files, records, scanners, printers, and other office equipment.
Education and Experience
- Must be 18 years of age or older and possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
- An Associate's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field is preferred.
- Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in accounting, bookkeeping, cashiering, banking, customer service, a mortgage company, financial institution, comptroller's office, treasurer's office, or other governmental organization.
- Must have computer experience and knowledge of bookkeeping or financial software.
- Must be able to accurately perform mathematical calculations involving cash transactions.
- Must be able to pass all required Civil Service examinations and other pre-employment requirements.
- Must have the ability to apply principles of rational systems to solve problems and interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
- Must be able to read and understand procedures and methods related to the job and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Must possess math skills related to bookkeeping, accounting, and cash handling.
- Must be able to complete light work involving exerting up to twenty (20) pounds of force occasionally, up to ten (10) pounds of force frequently, or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
- Must be able to complete work duties involving reaching, handling, fingering, feeling, and repetitive motions.
- Must have hearing sufficient to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and receive detailed information through oral communication.
- Must have visual acuity necessary for determining accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Must be able to adapt to changing situations, work effectively with others, and participate in a team-oriented environment.
- Must be customer-service oriented and maintain excellent customer service skills while working with taxpayers and the public during high-volume periods.
