Animal Law Teaching Fellow

Purpose:
The Animal Law Teaching Fellow within the Center for Animal Law Studies (CALS) reports directly to the Director of the Animal Law Program. This role supports the success of the Animal Law LLM and MSL degree programs, contributing to online and in‑person courses, and mentoring students outside the classroom. The ideal candidate has a strong background in animal law, effective teaching and communication skills, and research proficiency.
This is a one‑year position beginning August
12026, with the potential for a one‑year renewal.
- Teaching and Course Development
Actively engage with students in CALS’ online courses; teach up to two introductory animal law courses per year; collaborate with faculty to improve curriculum and materials; develop and update course content for online and in‑person delivery. - Student Mentorship and Support
Provide individualized mentorship; facilitate virtual and in‑person office hours; support student‑run animal law groups and projects. - Research and Content Development
Conduct research on current animal law topics, curate relevant content for CALS’ educational programs, publications, and collaborations; produce high‑quality content for online platforms, academic papers, and presentations. - Administrative and Program Support
Assist with program administration, event coordination, student assessments, alumni engagement; use CALS’ learning management system to manage course materials and communications. - Collaboration and Outreach
Represent CALS at conferences, seminars, and other events; collaborate with faculty, staff, and external organizations to expand CALS’ reach. - Other Duties as Assigned
Support additional tasks as required.
- Proficient in animal law principles and current legal frameworks.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to explain complex legal concepts.
- Superior research skills and independent analytical ability.
- Familiarity with learning management systems (Canvas, Moodle).

- Strong organizational skills; ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Excellent mentorship and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adapt teaching materials for diverse learning styles.

- Jurisdiction:
Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school. - At least two years of teaching, research, or practice experience with strong legal research and writing skills.
- Experience working with students and providing academic or professional guidance.
- Specialized study in animal law or a closely related field.
- Experience designing and teaching animal law courses at the graduate level.
- Experience in animal law practice or legal advocacy focusing on current trends and challenges.
- Experience mentoring students or colleagues in an academic setting with a focus on student success.
Full‑time: 37.5hours per week. Standard schedule Monday–Friday, including summer, with flexibility for evening and weekend teaching. Remote position:
No. Pay: $59,000 per year (FLSA exempt). Occasional travel for conferences and outreach activities.
General office and classroom environments with prolonged periods of sitting and computer work. Ability to communicate via phone, email, online meetings, and in person. Ability to lift up to 15pounds occasionally.
