OverviewPlymouth-Canton seeks culturally responsive educators who will support and sustain equity-focused instruction for all learners. These educators create high achieving learning environments. They identify and systematically apply differentiated instruction and assessment that improves achievement for all learners from all racial groups.
The Adapted Physical Education Teacher provides individualized physical education instruction or services to students receiving special education who qualify for adaptive PE. Adapted physical education teachers evaluate and assess motor competency, physical fitness, and skills in play, recreation, leisure, and sports. APE is a mandated related service for students with disabilities who require specially designed instruction in physical education to meet their unique needs.
Responsibilities- Provide consultation to administrators, instructional staff, students, and families regarding evidence-based practices for motor activities including recreation and leisure time activities.
- Provide direct instruction in recreation and leisure time activities for students with disabilities ages 5‑26.
- Develop appropriate, measurable IEP goals and objectives as a member of the IEP team (if applicable).
- Plan the Physical Education program to meet students' needs, interests, and abilities.
- Provide ongoing evaluation of student progress toward goals and objectives.
- Consultation with physical education teachers on adaptive techniques for students with adapted physical education needs.
- Demonstrate clear written and oral communication.
- Create inclusive opportunities for students with disabilities to participate with peers in general education activities.
- Maintain physical education equipment, inventory, and instruct students in proper use of equipment.
- Provide a flexible, stable, and pleasant student-centered learning environment while maintaining appropriate classroom management.
- Apply culturally relevant pedagogy in teaching practices.
- Show knowledge of positive behavioral supports and interventions.
- Effectively deliver instruction, maintain classroom environment, prepare and plan for students' needs and demonstrate professional responsibilities.
- Maintain student records, attendance, performance, and progress.
- Help develop, implement and evaluate individualized behavior management plans and strategies.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues in professional learning communities.
- Apply knowledge of research-based instructional practices.
- Collaborate in grade level teams to discuss student work and share best practices.
- Participate in ongoing professional development.
- Provide supervision and oversight to classroom staff and students during the assigned workday.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Follow the schedule outlined by the Special Education Supervisor.
Performance of this position will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Certificated Personnel.

Physical DemandsThe physical demands include frequent standing, talking or hearing, walking and sitting, occasional bending or twisting at the neck, occasional pushing or lifting up to 50 lbs, and responsibilities for safety and well-being of others. Vision abilities required include close vision for reading handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus.
