Special Education Teacher – Extended School Year (ESY) Services POSITION SUMMARY
Reed City Area Public Schools is seeking a dedicated and student-centered Special Education Teacher for extended school year (ESY) services during summer. The successful candidate will work intensively with a student, who will be entering the 8th grade in the fall, to prevent skill regression and maintain progress on reading and writing academic goals. This position requires targeted, data-driven instruction in reading, writing, mathematics, and speech/language across a condensed but focused timeframe.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Instruction & Goal Implementation- Deliver intensive, direct instruction aligned to Student’s IEP goals in reading (phonics/decoding), writing mechanics, mathematics (money/problem-solving), and receptive language/vocabulary
- Implement explicit, structured phonics instruction targeting silent
-e, vowel teams, and complex sound patterns - Provide targeted writing instruction focused on sentence composition, grammar, and paragraph organization
- Teach foundational math concepts including coin identification, money values, and simple word problems
- Collect progress data each session and analyze at the end of the services
- Monitor student performance against baseline data and adjust instruction based on results
- Document regression prevention and maintain accurate records for reporting
- Apply all accommodations listed in IEP: text-to-speech, speech-to-text, extended time, reduced assignments, guided notes, and preferential seating
- Differentiate instruction to match student's learning modality; recognizing a strength in listening comprehension
- Use guided notes, frequent checks for understanding, and one-on-one support strategies
- Maintain regular communication with parent regarding summer progress and any concerns
- Document and report ESY progress according to district timelines
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or related field
- Valid Michigan Special Education teaching certification (or appropriate endorsement)
- Demonstrated experience teaching students with speech/language impairment and learning disabilities
- Strong knowledge of evidence-based phonics instruction (structured literacy/Orton-Gillingham approaches preferred)
- Proficiency with assistive technology (text-to-speech, speech-to-text platforms)
- Experience with IEP implementation and understanding of individual student goals
- Strong data collection and progress-monitoring skills
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in documentation
- CPR/First Aid certification preferred
