POSITION: Middle/High School Science Teacher
REPORTS TO: Building Principal
SALARY: Per Athens Education Association Master Agreement
EFFECTIVE DATE: August 24, 2026
Minimum Qualifications- Possess a Bachelor's Degree in Science Education, Secondary Education, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with an appropriate science endorsement.
- Strong foundation in the essential instructional practices in literacy, mathematics, and science.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Michigan Science Standards (MSS) and effective middle/high school instructional practices.
- Experience integrating technology into instruction is preferred.
- Teach Athens Area Schools approved science curriculum.
- Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction in middle/high school science courses.
- Create a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment that promotes student achievement, inquiry, and scientific thinking.
- Utilize a variety of instructional strategies, including hands-on investigations, laboratory activities, and project-based learning, to meet the diverse needs of learners.
- Regularly assess and monitor student progress and utilize data to drive instructional decisions.
- Maintain accurate and timely records of student attendance, grades, and academic progress.
- Communicate course expectations, student progress, and academic concerns with students, parents, and guardians.
- Foster student curiosity and encourage the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning skills.
- Ensure the safe use, storage, and maintenance of laboratory equipment, materials, and classroom resources in accordance with district policies and safety regulations.
- Collaborate with colleagues to improve instructional practices, curriculum alignment, and student outcomes.
- Participate in departmental, building, and district meetings as required.
- Be willing to participate in a variety of extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, including staff development and curriculum development.
- Be willing to work as part of a building team for the improvement of instruction and student achievement.
- Differentiate instruction and provide appropriate interventions and enrichment opportunities to support all learners.
- Incorporate educational technology and digital resources to enhance student learning and engagement.
- Collaborate with special education staff, counselors, interventionists, and other support personnel to ensure student success and implementation of accommodations and supports as required.
- Establish proactive, routine communication with parents and guardians regarding student achievement, progress, and classroom expectations.
- Support district and school improvement initiatives.
- Be open to continuous change and professional growth.
- Be an excellent communicator with students, parents, colleagues, and community members.
- Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Experience teaching middle/high school science.
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a Science (DI/DQ) endorsement preferred. Candidates holding Biology (DA/IA), Chemistry (DC/IC), Physics (DE/IE), Earth/Space Science (DH/IH), or Physical Science (DP/IP) endorsements may also be considered based on assignment and qualifications.
- Knowledge of inquiry-based instruction, STEM education, and Next Generation Science Standards-aligned practices.
- Experience conducting and supervising laboratory investigations and scientific research projects.
- Familiarity with Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and data-driven instructional practices.
- Have a willingness to help support extracurricular programs, student organizations, academic competitions, or athletic activities.
