Position Summary

Supports a positive learning environment by providing additional educational support to English‑Learner students while maintaining confidentiality.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supports and works with ESL students individually or in small groups with grade level material under the direction of a classroom teacher to speak and write in the English language.
  • Supports and reinforces reading and comprehension strategies.
  • Records and reports assessment data to teachers and school administrator; completes required forms, reports, and other paperwork.
  • Supports curriculum (reading, writing, math) intervention programs for students.
  • Works with school team and stakeholders to discuss students' goals and progress and discuss additional interventions as needed.
  • Administers assessment tests and interprets results to identify student needs.
  • Attends professional development sessions, training programs and conferences to remain current in the field of literacy.
  • Communicates with community, staff, and students to answer questions, disseminate or explain information.
  • Serves as a key resource to other school personnel on ESL students and their challenges; responds to questions and resolves problems or concerns as needed.
  • Translates oral and written correspondence and serves as a liaison between parents and teachers during and after school hours and during school conferences as needed.
  • Serves as a resource and support to ESL students as they adapt to a new culture as needed.
Education

Two years of study at an institution of higher education, or an Associate's degree (or higher), or successful completion of the Work Keys Equivalency Test (prior to date of application).

Experience

Experience interacting with children individually and in groups in an instructional/educational type setting preferred.

Knowledge
  • Knowledge of school policies and safety regulations, required.
  • Knowledge of a different language and cultures, may be required.
  • Knowledge of reading, writing, and mathematics, required.
Skills
  • Good oral and written communication skills, required.
  • Basic computer skills, required.
  • Fluent in the English language, required.
  • Accuracy and fluency in speaking, reading and writing a second language is preferred. Preferably one of the following:
    Arabic, Spanish and/or Albanian.
Abilities
  • Assist classroom teachers in instructing, reading, writing and mathematics, required.
  • Ability to read and interpret the English language, required.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence, required.
  • Ability to be caring, understanding, and friendly toward students, required.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, staff and parents, required.
  • Ability to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, required.
  • Ability to read and interpret school policies and handbook, required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff and community and those of different cultures, required.
  • Ability to grasp position‑specific software with minimal training, required.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English to perform essential job duties, required.
Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds of files and material. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen and small numbers.
