Position Description

Washtenaw Community College is seeking Part time Instructors to teach Humanities credit courses in the following areas:

  • Art History
  • Humanities (courses such as Comparative Religions and Mythology)
  • Music
  • Philosophy

Positions may become available each semester. Upon successful submission of your application, resume, and transcripts, you will be considered for teaching opportunities on a per‑course basis.

Essential

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain an environment conducive to student learning.
  • Prepare for and instruct assigned course(s) using appropriate learning experiences and materials that meet overall course objectives and program goals.
  • Adhere to the course syllabus and comply with Assessment of Student Academic Achievement.
  • Evaluate student progress through day‑to‑day evaluation, written examinations, and overall observation.
  • Grade assignments in a meaningful way to promote continued student growth, return graded assignments to students in a timely manner, and assign final grades for all students, meeting or beating all institutional deadlines for completion.
  • Actively support student success through guidance, advising, and assisting individual students as needed.
  • Participate in professional activities, which could include curriculum planning, examination development, textbook selection, program evaluation/revision, and other professional planning activities.
  • Participate in the Student Opinion Questionnaire (SOQ) process.
  • Maintain professional knowledge and expertise, including compliance training.
  • Utilize technology, including AI‑enabled tools and software where appropriate, to support teaching, learning, student engagement, professional responsibilities, institutional service, and other duties, in a manner consistent with academic standards, professional ethics, confidentiality requirements, and institutional policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Hours/Schedule

Schedules vary according to class schedules. Part‑time Instructors may teach up to eight contact hours per week or 120 contact hours per semester.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Humanities (HUM): Earned Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Humanities, Liberal Arts/General Studies (with Humanities core) OR master’s/MFA degree from one of the following qualifying fields with a minimum of 18 graduate credits drawn from at least three of the qualifying disciplines:
    American Studies, Art, Art History, Classics, Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, Liberal Arts/General Studies, Music, Philosophy, Religion/Theology, or Western/Eastern/World Civilization.
  • Philosophy (PHL): Earned Master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in Philosophy OR master’s degree in a closely related field with a minimum of 18 graduate credits in Philosophy.
  • Art (ART) and Music (MUS):  for Requirements by Subject/Course Title.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology relevant to the discipline and faculty role, including the capacity to learn and appropriately utilize emerging AI‑supported tools, evaluate the accuracy, reliability, and appropriateness of AI‑generated content, maintain confidentiality where required, exercise professional and academic judgment, and uphold ethical standards in the use of technology for teaching, learning, and service.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Recent, successful, post‑secondary teaching experience in Humanities courses.
Compensation

Hourly Rate: $69.66
