Job Summary

Divine Child Elementary School is seeking a compassionate, faith‑filled, and student‑centered individual to serve as the full‑time Elementary School Counselor with a primary focus on supporting students in grades 6–8. The School Counselor promotes the academic, social, emotional, and spiritual well‑being of students while collaborating closely with parents, teachers, administration, and parish community members. The ideal candidate fosters a safe, supportive, and Christ‑centered environment that encourages students to grow in confidence, resilience, responsibility, and faith.

Employees of Divine Child Elementary School support and uphold the philosophy of Catholic education and the mission, vision, and core beliefs of Divine Child Elementary School. They act as witnesses to Gospel values by modeling the teachings of Jesus Christ, and they support and adhere to the Code of Conduct and policies and procedures of the school and Archdiocese of Detroit.

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and small‑group counseling support for students, particularly those in grades 6–8
  • Assist students in developing healthy social, emotional, organizational, and decision‑making skills
  • Support students through academic, behavioral, social, and family‑related challenges
  • Collaborate with teachers and administration to identify and support students’ academic and emotional needs
  • Monitor student academic progress, manage academic intervention efforts, and support summer school enrollment
  • Coordinate service delivery in partnership with the Instructional Support team
  • Communicate regularly with parents regarding student concerns, progress, and support plans
  • Coordinate referrals to outside counseling or support services when appropriate
  • Assist with crisis response and student support during emergencies or difficult situations
  • Facilitate classroom guidance lessons and programs focused on character development, mental wellness, conflict resolution, digital citizenship, and Catholic values
  • Support students during key transitional periods, including the transition into and through Jr. High
  • Coordinate Jr. High student leadership, peer support, or mentoring opportunities as appropriate
  • Assist Jr. High students and families with high school readiness and transition planning
  • Maintain accurate counseling records and documentation in accordance with school policies and confidentiality standards
  • Participate in student support meetings, parent conferences, and faculty collaboration meetings
  • Support and uphold school discipline policies with a restorative and student‑centered approach
  • Collaborate with parish and school leadership to promote a positive and faith‑filled school culture
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and ethical counseling standards
  • Support the school’s mission by modeling Catholic values
  • Perform all other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling, Counseling, Social Work, or related field
  • Valid school counseling license/certification
  • Prior counseling experience in an elementary or middle school setting
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent social‑emotional development
  • Willingness to support the mission of Divine Child Catholic Schools and Catholic education
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with students, parents, faculty, and staff
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong organizational and problem‑solving abilities
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise professional discretion
  • Experience with student support plans, behavioral interventions, and crisis response preferred
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office, and student information systems
