As part of the Enrollment Management division, and reporting to the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Admissions, the Admissions Counselor role serves as a key member of the team focused on supporting the recruitment goals of the University. The Admissions Counselor is part of a professional, fast‑paced, and cohesive team where work feels like a second home. The scope of recruitment is typically within southeastern Michigan for our regional public institution.
Responsibilities include building awareness of the UM‑Dearborn brand and conveying the sense of Michigan Excellence and Community upon which we pride ourselves. Outreach efforts are ongoing and vary throughout the year as focus shifts among the following activities: on and off campus school visits, general high school presentations, college fairs and recruitment events (in‑person and virtual); and the counseling of prospective students to get them into the admissions funnel focusing on students prior to application.
This position will also work with students after admission through the admissions and enrollment process. While this role will work primarily with the first‑year student population there will be a coordinated effort with the transfer team with the Office of Admission.
Recruitment for FTIAC students
- Plan, coordinate, and participate in campus‑wide outreach projects and activities, including local high schools to give general admissions presentations to prospective students and high school counselors, community organizations, and partners related to undergraduate admissions and dual enrollment.
- Establish relationships with high school counselors at visits to strengthen relationships with the University of Michigan – Dearborn and support enrollment pipelines in the designated recruitment territory.
- Prepare detailed assessments and reports on engagement activities and participate in the development of strategic plans for supporting pipelines in coordination with the Assistant Director of Recruitment and Admissions.
- Make formal public presentations and/or serve as an official representative of the University at various recruitment visits and events (in‑person and virtual) including high school visits, on‑site admissions, college fairs and tours to the University.
- Use a territory management model for strategic enrollment management initiatives.
- Maintain prospective student records in our customer relationships management software, tracking outreach and following up with students through multiple modes of communication.
- Conduct recruitment through virtual methods (presentations and appointments utilizing Zoom and other virtual services) as needed.
- Counsel potential students (First‑Year, Transfer, and Non‑Degree) and their families on through the admissions funnel (from applicant to enroll); including, admission requirements, policies and procedures, transfer of credit, scholarships, basic financial aid concepts and other related issues.
- Connect prospective students and parents with other college resources, including faculty, student life, academic office, and business office.
- Assist in phone call campaigns for applied and admitted students.
Application Review
- Review undergraduate applications and materials to make decisions using established University criteria.
- Professionally represent the university to internal and external constituencies cultivating relationships with key influencers including school counselors/advisors, community‑based organizations, and other external partners for undergraduate first year recruitment.
- Responsible for the primary outreach of the institution for recruitment but will also provide assistance with calling campaigns, administrative work, and office coverage in off‑peak recruitment times as needed.
- Effectively use Salesforce (customer relationship management tool) and Banner (student information system).
- Assist with internal prospective student events (orientation, open houses etc.) and outreach when needed.
