Position Overview

We are seeking a compassionate and student-focused Elementary School Counselor to support the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development of elementary students. This role partners with students, families, teachers, administrators, and community resources to create a positive, inclusive, and supportive learning environment while helping students develop the skills needed for lifelong success.

Responsibilities
  • Provide individual and group counseling to support students' academic, social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
  • Assist students in understanding and navigating school culture.
  • Teach conflict resolution, problem-solving, and restorative justice techniques.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, support staff, parents/guardians, and community agencies to support student success.
  • Provide parents and guardians with accurate, comprehensive, and caring communication regarding student progress and available resources.
  • Conduct parent and student conferences as needed.
  • Support students experiencing family crises, including separation, divorce, grief, neglect, abuse, unemployment, or substance abuse within the family.
  • Participate in planning and implementing a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program.
  • Promote parent and family involvement in student success.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential counseling records in accordance with state laws and district policies.
  • Communicate regularly with school leadership regarding student needs and support plans.
  • Work collaboratively with professional learning communities and grade-level teams to support student achievement.
  • Support Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) and other research-based intervention strategies.
  • Analyze student data and assessments to help guide interventions and improve student outcomes.
  • Participate in ongoing professional development and continuous improvement initiatives.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Michigan Teaching Certificate with Guidance Counselor (NT) endorsement or a Michigan School Guidance Counselor License with the appropriate endorsement and grade level.
  • Counseling and/or teaching experience.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, staff, and community partners.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyze situations, solve problems, and implement restorative justice practices.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine commitment to student success.
  • Understanding of child development and the academic, social, and emotional needs of elementary-aged students.
  • Knowledge of culturally responsive teaching and counseling practices.
  • Experience with MTSS, student interventions, and research-based instructional practices.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
