Job Title

Advanced Emissions Systems Engineer – Gasoline ICE/HEV/PHEV

Overview

We are seeking an Advanced Emissions Systems Engineer to lead the concept definition, design, and integration of advanced emissions systems for gasoline-powered Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Hybrid Electric Vehicle (HEV), and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) applications.

This role focuses on developing hardware and software strategies to achieve stringent emissions regulatory standards, including SULEV
20, SULEV
15, and SULEV
10. The engineer will serve as a technical lead, balancing cross‑functional trade‑offs across mechanical, electrical, and chemical engineering domains to deliver optimized and durable propulsion system solutions. This is a hybrid position requiring 4 days per week onsite.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the definition and design of advanced emissions system concepts integrating hardware, controls, and packaging across engine, transmission, generator, and aftertreatment systems.
  • Develop and support emissions compliance strategies for gasoline ICE, HEV, and PHEV applications.
  • Coordinate cross‑functional engineering activities and lead technical trade‑off discussions to achieve optimized system‑level solutions.
  • Drive project milestones and coordinate technical work streams to ensure timely delivery of project goals.
  • Develop and maintain systems engineering and quality documentation including Boundary Diagrams, P‑Diagrams, and DFMEA.
  • Define attribute targets and cascade system and subsystem requirements, functions, and use cases to support emissions compliance throughout the vehicle lifecycle.
  • Conduct vehicle‑level, engine‑level, and powertrain testing to investigate and validate emissions compliance with various aftertreatment systems.
  • Analyze large datasets and develop predictive models to evaluate vehicle and emissions performance.
  • Manage multi‑year projects including parts procurement, testing resources, timing, and status reporting.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related engineering field.
  • 5+ years of experience in propulsion or emissions system design and integration.
  • 3+ years of experience with Systems Engineering principles and quality tools such as DFMEA, Boundary Diagrams, and P‑Diagrams.
  • 1+ years of project management experience.
  • Understanding of exhaust gas chemical reactions and aftertreatment systems.
  • Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, engine control devices, and power distribution architectures including 48V systems.
  • Understanding of vehicle control systems, electrical systems, and system‑level integration trade‑offs.
  • Knowledge of vehicle engines and powertrain systems including conventional ICE and hybrid configurations.
  • Experience with statistical methods for data analysis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree or PhD in Engineering.
  • Strong project management and cross‑functional leadership skills.
  • Direct experience with emissions regulations, compliance, and testing.
  • Understanding of HEV/PHEV powertrain architectures and their impact on emissions performance.
  • Experience leading technical trade‑off discussions in a high‑volume production environment.
  • Familiarity with engine controls, mechanical packaging, and catalyst chemistry.
  • Experience with data analysis, modeling techniques, and large datasets.
  • Experience using MATLAB, Simulink, Python, or equivalent modeling and data processing tools.
  • Experience with 1D modeling tools and methodologies.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging emissions regulations and environmental compliance standards.
Benefits

Benefits can include Group Health (Medical, Dental, and Vision), Paid Time Off, Paid Holidays, 401(k) matching, Group Life and Disability insurance, Professional Development opportunities, Wellness programs, and a variety of other perks.
