Position Overview
In this position, you will lead all heat exchangers (Condenser, Radiator, CAC, WCC, Battery Chiller, etc.) with expertise in design, materials (Aluminum alloy), and manufacturing processes (brazing), as well as laboratory analysis techniques. Increasing quality issues in manufacturing, process controls, material usage, and HEX design are an increasing priority as experience levels at the suppliers have diminished over the last 10 years.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Responsible (Owner) for the creation and maintenance of the Core Engineering Documents (FMA Documents, Requirements and Test Procedures, etc.)
- Lead Global HEX Tech Club
- Integral to signoff of DV/PV/SREA/3DX HEX Components Test Completion and Passage
- Go‑To for problem solving – launch, recall, quality / field issues
- Coach, mentor and train HEX engineers in materials, analysis tools, design and manufacturing for HEX components
- Able to lead technical discussions and deep dives to deliver optimized refrigerant or powertrain designs for use in vehicle systems
- Expert in corrosion design, testing, and analysis to root cause failures and work with suppliers to implement changes
- Must be able to work with other Ford organizations, labs, and outside suppliers to help direct solutions for issues
- Support global applications teams with refrigerant and coolant‑based heat exchangers issues
- Must have minimum of 5 years’ laboratory experience in metallurgy related to heat exchangers
- Must have minimum of 5 years’ experience in corrosion lab testing and material design
- Must have experience with designing and implementing brazing equipment on a plant floor
- Optimize designs for cost reduction while maintaining quality performance
- Interact with refrigerant, powertrain, NVH, controls and CAE teams
- Collaborate with subsystem technical specialists within the company and with external suppliers
- Able to lead and effectively interact new technology/supplier development
- Able to lead HEX strategy papers such as modularity, commodity business plan
- Lead technical assessment of supplier designs and provide recommendation for sourcing
- Provide technical support for cost reduction ideas and quality issues
- Provide technical support to Office of General Counsel for legal issues as needed
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Industrial Engineering
- 10+ years of experience in heat exchange or systems engineering or related field
- 6+ years of experience in HEX designs and development
- 6+ years of materials laboratory metallurgical experience
- Extensive materials background in corrosion testing and design
- Extensive knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes for joining/brazing
- Experience with manufacturing equipment
- Demonstrated proficiency in various lab tools – SEM, FTIR, surface analysis tools, TGA
- Proven history of evaluating choices and directing a team based on technical ideals balanced with industrialization realities
- Key attributes:
- Ability to lead and align collections of people that do not directly report to this position
- Ability to institutionalize the key factors of thermal systems success and lessons learned through documentation (design rules, requirements, technical design guides, etc.) and to teach associated learning sessions
- Ability to form an opinion, communicate it effectively at all levels, and drive the company in a winning direction
- Master of Engineering in Materials Science or Chemistry (desirable, not required)
