Qualifications
  • High school graduate with a minimum of five years experience on buses or heavy trucks.
  • Certification by the State of Michigan as Master Heavy Duty Truck Mechanic or thorough knowledge of same.
  • Must be willing to accept further training opportunities (seminars, workshops, etc.) as prescribed and work towards certification in the State of Michigan Mechanics Competency. Also will be required to take a test.
  • Must acquire a valid Michigan Driver's License with a CDL-Type C and B that includes a P endorsement.
  • Be willing to work any shift.
  • Thorough knowledge of the procedures and methods used in maintenance and repair of gasoline/diesel engines of all types used in the school system.
  • Thorough knowledge of all automotive electrical systems including ignition, charging, starting and lighting circuits and ability to service and repair same.
  • Thorough knowledge of both automotive and heavy duty braking systems (air, hydraulic, vacuum over hydraulic) and ability to service, repair and overhaul all types of brake systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of gasoline/diesel engine fuel systems, ability to service and repair same, fuel pumps, etc.
  • Thorough knowledge of engine tune-up methods and procedures and ability to perform same.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to service, repair and rebuild all types of vehicle steering systems.
  • Previous experience and training in all phases of automotive and heavy vehicle maintenance and repair desirable.
  • Physically able to perform above assignments.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Responsible for maintenance and repair of all Transportation Department vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment, including, but not limited to school buses, trucks, cars, tractors, lawn mowers.
  • Perform all work on all diesel engines themselves and their related parts such as:
    • Valve train adjustments
    • Engine overhauls
    • Installation of water pumps, compressor, turbo chargers, etc.
    • Seal replacements
  • Perform routine safety checks as buses are maintained.
  • Cooperate with Head Mechanic on the necessary maintenance records for each vehicle.
  • As time allows, cooperate and assist where needed in all other repairs necessary outside engine compartment.
  • Share the responsibility of maintaining a clean and well organized garage.
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor and/or Head Mechanic.
  • Report any and all unsafe or hazardous conditions.
