The Human Resources Department will be establishing a Promotional
* Eligible Register for the position of Fire Lieutenant
.

All Driver Engineers in the Fire Department with at least two (2) years continuous service as Driver Engineer with the Fire Department in the two (2) years immediately preceding Thursday, August 6, 2026 are eligible to compete for this promotion.

Any Driver Engineer who has had discipline imposed from the Appointing Authority within the past twelve (12) months preceding the date of posting will be automatically disqualified from competition in the promotional process.

  • This promotional register will be established under current Competitive Promotional Procedures in effect on the date of posting. Additional information will be provided to eligible candidates within five (5) business days after August 20, 2026.

This position is a first-level supervisory position, assigned in any of the following areas; administrative, firefighting, training or emergency medical functions. The position is responsible for demonstrating positive attitude, diligent work ethic and respect during emergency and non-emergency activities. This position carries forward the duties, knowledge and skills associated with the Driver Engineer position.

Major Duties
  • Responds to calls and directs the work of personnel until relieved by superior officer.
  • Operates fire suppression, emergency response, and emergency medical equipment in response to calls.
  • Provides emergency medical care to patients at emergency scenes.
  • Completes, or reviews subordinates, all reports for accuracy and completeness; including incident, administrative, disciplinary, injury and accident reports.
  • Ensures that all assigned personnel are trained and compliant with standard operating procedures or guidelines; directs personnel in corrective actions as required.
  • Implements established company-level training activities; reviews employee training hours and programs; delivers employee training. Leads and participates in station training of subordinates and coordinates the completion of assigned training assigned through the Training Officer or department.
  • Inspects, assesses and appropriately uses assigned Personal Protective equipment and uniforms. Ensures subordinate employees wear, clean and maintain assigned PPE correctly.
  • Supervises and participates in the maintenance of assigned apparatus, tools, equipment, station, and grounds.
  • May conduct facility inspections, in conjunction with the Fire Marshal’s office, to ensure compliance with fire and life safety codes; reviews building plans.
  • Performs pre-fire planning activities to recognize and identify hazard associated with commercial or industrial facilities.
  • Leads, or directs others, to provide station tours to visitors.
  • Participate in Community Risk Reduction activities including; fire prevention education to schools and community groups, installation of smoke alarms or demonstrating department capabilities.
  • Manages assigned tool, equipment, and supply inventory.
  • Administrative assignments may manage additional budget and purchasing responsibilities for assigned position.
  • When assigned as departmental Training Officer, the position will be responsible for the development, delivery, assessment, coordination and implementation of training programs and maintenance of training records. The position will be responsible for budget expenditures related to course attendance, travel, per diem and other related items.
  • When assigned, the position may work in the management of department information technology including computers, projectors, MDTs, radios and other associated technology. The position will coordinate with MCECD
    911 center for problems or issues related to dispatch, radio system, MDT system and or related communications issues.
