Position: Educational Interpreter for the Hearing Impaired (4) - DCS

Job Title

Performs the following tasks in the classroom to assist teaching staff with the individualization of instruction. Only applicants permitted or licensed by Alabama Licensure Board for Interpreters and Translators (ALBIT) will be considered.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides manual interpretation of instruction and classroom directions for student(s) who are deaf.
  • Interpret from spoken English to the IEP specified modality and from the IEP modality to the spoken language.
  • Provides, under the supervision of a certified teacher, instruction to students who are deaf in American Sign Language and written English to enable the student to understand instructional concepts, language and activities of daily living.
  • Provides one-on-one assistance and tutoring to student(s).
  • Provides job coaching to students who are deaf as required.
  • Assists other students as needs and time permit.
  • Provides formal and informal instruction to other staff members in manual communication.
  • Participates in planning and in-service activities as appropriate.
  • Helps supervise students during lunch periods, assemblies, and field trips and other activities.
  • Maintains high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Participates in professional development activities.
  • Encourages communication and interaction between deaf/hard of hearing students and faculty, staff, students and others.
  • Prepares for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting and/or transliterating.

Qualification Requirements

Education & Experience:
  • One year certificate from college or technical school, or three to six months related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience. At least a rating of intermediate or better on the sign communication proficiency interview (SCPI) Rating Scale. Appropriate credentials must be provided. Only applicants permitted or licensed by Alabama Licensure Board for Interpreters and Translators (ALBIT) will be considered.
Language

Skills:
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
Mathematical

Skills:
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Reasoning Ability:
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions related, among other things, to core academic subjects at the high school level.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Physical Demands:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand and walk.
  • The employee is occasionally required to sit, bend, stoop, squat, crouch, kneel, use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee must routinely lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
  • The employee must occasionally lift, push, pull and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment:
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • The employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions for short periods of time.
