Leidos Mission Assurance is seeking a highly skilled Senior Quality Engineer to join our Space Systems team in Decatur, AL. This exciting opportunity supports the manufacturing, assembly, integration, and testing of the Universal Stage Adapter. The adapter will connect NASA’s Orion spacecraft to the Space Launch System’s Exploration Upper Stage and protect a co-manifested payload. Work is primarily first shift, Monday‑Friday, however, some off‑shift and weekend support may be required during critical manufacturing periods.
PrimaryResponsibilities
This role will be responsible for providing quality surveillance at a subcontractor’s facility, driving quality assurance activities, ensuring compliance with AS9100 and customer requirements, and leading continuous improvement initiatives. They will work cross‑functionally with Engineering, Manufacturing, Supply Chain, Program Management, and subcontractor personnel to ensure product integrity and compliance throughout the lifecycle.
- Act as the primary Leidos quality representative on 1st shift at a subcontractor’s facility.
- Ensure adherence to AS9100, customer, and regulatory requirements across the program.
- Generate program quality planning for human spaceflight hardware
- Develop inspection/test procedures and process plans
- Coordinate Government Mandatory Inspection Points with DCMA
- Manage the resolution and documentation of non‑conformances and support Material Review Boards.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective/preventive action initiatives.
- Drive First Article Inspections (FAIs) per AS9102.
- Support Design Reviews, Manufacturing Readiness Reviews (MRRs), and Configuration Control Boards (CCBs).
- Lead customer audits, source inspections, and quality reviews.
- Collaborate with Program Management and Engineering to resolve quality‑related challenges.
- Drive Continuous Improvement & Data‑Driven Decision Making.
- Utilize metrics and data analysis to identify trends, drive improvements, and reduce defects.
- Champion a culture of quality and accountability within the organization.
- Candidate must have a Bachelor’s degree with 8-12 years of prior relevant work experience or a Master’s degree with 6-10 years of prior relevant work experience. In lieu of a degree, a High School diploma/GED or equivalent education with 15 years of relevant experience will be considered.
- Candidate must have experience working with non‑conforming material, performing failure analysis, identifying root cause and implementing corrective action.
- Hands‑on experience with FAI (AS9102), RCCA (8D, 5-Why), and quality tools.
- Must be knowledgeable of standard inspection and measurement equipment, i.e. micrometers, calipers, multimeters, magnification, black light inspections, etc. Must be able to interpret and apply Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing requirements.
- Experience working with customer quality representatives, suppliers, and regulatory bodies.
- Candidate must be able to work at heights.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
- Must be able to pass an eye exam for visual inspection.
- Candidate must be a resident of, or willing to relocate to, the Decatur, AL area.
- Candidate must be a US Citizen.
- Candidate ideally will have at least 8 years of quality experience in an ISO
9001/AS9100 system or equivalent experience in DOD, Aerospace, or Automotive manufacturing quality control. - Demonstrated technical knowledge in spacecraft, launch vehicle, or high‑performance aircraft development; including one or more of the following: human spaceflight, military or commercial spaceflight, rocket propulsion, advanced aircraft, or composite aerospace structures.
- Knowledge of Non‑Destructive Inspection practices.
- Experience compiling End Item Data Packages.
- Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Six Sigma Green/Black Belt, or AS9100 Lead Auditor certification.
- Experience with DoD, NASA, or hypersonic programs.
