Position: Research Associate IV, Step 1

Purpose Of The Position

The selected candidate will support the Office of Data Science and Informatics (ODSI) within the Lab for Applied Science (LAS) under the Earth System Science Center (ESSC) s role focuses on advancing data science capabilities to support NASA Earth science data management, access, and dissemination. ODSI evaluates trends across data science and informatics communities to inform strategic direction and develop effective, scalable solutions.

The office also provides a user‑centered perspective on how Earth science data are represented, communicated, and utilized. The position contributes to cross‑disciplinary collaboration aimed at improving all phases of the Earth science data lifecycle, including policy, engineering, workflows, and information delivery.

Duties / Responsibilities
  • Support the HLS Lead to manage efforts related to the Satellite Needs Working Group (SNWG) Cycle 1 HLS, Cycle 3 HLS‑VI, Cycle 4 HLS Low Latency, and Cycle 5 10 m HLS products.
  • Design, implement, and manage cloud resources related to the HLS suite of solutions on AWS platforms.
  • Support HLS Lead with day‑to‑day HLS project activities and coordinate with upstream and downstream stakeholders (LPDAAC, OPERA, GIBS, and ESDIS members).
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 45 months of full‑time, verifiable work experience.
  • Hands‑on experience in cloud native code development on major platforms (Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of remote sensing satellite data sets.
  • Working knowledge of scientific code development using Python/C++/Fortran.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proven ability to work in a team setting.
Desired Qualifications
  • Master’s degree and/or Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science, Earth Science, Engineering, or a related field is desired.
Published Salary

$62,659 – $66,489
