A pipefitter specializes in the design, installation, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of industrial and commercial carbon steel or stainless‑steel piping systems. They interpret blueprints and specifications to accurately assemble and install systems that transport substances such as water, steam, chemicals, and fuel. Beyond installation and fabrication, pipe fitters test the installed systems for integrity and safety, ensuring they adhere to regulatory standards.
Their expertise is vital in industries like oil and gas, power generation, manufacturing, and construction, where they often collaborate with other tradespeople to ensure seamless infrastructure integration.

Functional Duties & Requirements:A pipefitter, sometimes referred to as a steamfitter, specializes in the installation, assembly, fabrication, maintenance, and repair of piping systems. These systems might transport water, steam, chemicals, and fuel in industrial and commercial environments.
- System Analysis: Evaluating blueprints, plans, and specifications to understand the piping requirements of a particular project.
- Measurement & Cutting: Measuring, cutting, threading, and preparing pipes to the required size, shape, and condition for welding.
- Installation: Assembling and installing piping systems according to specifications.
- Testing: Testing installed systems to ensure they function properly, using equipment such as hydrostatic, leak, high‑pressure, and x‑ray testing devices.
- Maintenance & Repair: Troubleshooting and repairing faulty systems and equipment.
- Safety: Adhering to safety regulations and standards to protect oneself and others on the job site.
- Collaboration: Working closely with other tradespeople, such as welders, plumbers, and contractors.
- Documentation: Keeping records of work performed, materials used, and other relevant data.
Specific Duties :
- Pipe Selection:
Selecting the type and size of pipe required based on material and pressure requirements. - Equipment Use:
Utilizing tools such as lifts, pipe benders, torches, and cutting saws. - Requirements:
Interpreting drawings, symbols, and callouts; general knowledge of building codes and regulations. - Welding & Brazing:
Connecting pipes using welding or brazing techniques, often with a specialized welder. - Flange Installation:
Securing and attaching pipes to walls, structures, and fixtures using brackets, clamps, hangers, or welding. - Fittings:
Securing pipes with elbows, unions, and tees. - Pipe Preparation:
Measuring, cleaning, grinding, beveling, and squaring pipe ends. - Insulation:
Applying insulation to pipes to prevent heat loss or maintain temperatures. - System Flush:
Cleaning and flushing the system after installation to remove debris or contaminants. - Inspection:
Performing site inspections to meet safety and regulatory requirements. - Pressure Testing:
Ensuring pipes are leak‑proof and can withstand necessary pressures by filling them with liquid or air under pressure. - Pipe Bending:
Using manual or hydraulic benders to achieve desired angles without compromising pipe integrity. - Material Knowledge:
Recognizing appropriate materials for specific applications, such as metals resistant to chemicals. - Valve Installation:
Installing and repairing valves to control flow within the piping system.
- Minimum of high school education, GED equivalent, or trade school.
- Required to read and write English, follow verbal instructions, and use simple math.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic understanding of pipe (carbon and stainless steel) systems and components.
- Ability to read and comprehend project drawings.
- Detail oriented and organized.
- Ability to self‑check work for accuracy and completeness.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and schedule requirements.
