Position: INTERNAL SEARCH - Carpenter/Painter

INTERNAL POSTING This position is posted in compliance with Alabama Code §16-22-15.
It is the intent to place a current employee in this position.

Responsible for the repair and maintenance of buildings and equipment, construction and repair of woodwork and cabinets, installation and repairing locks and other related tasks.

Salary: Appropriate placement on ACCS Salary Schedule E2, Grade 3: $47,029 - $65,218

(Salary placement within this range is determined by your documented years of full-time related work experience)

Work Hours: Monday through Thursday, 6:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.;
Friday 6:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.

Applicants must provide information from previous employers documenting full-time related work experience if an offer is made.

  • Determine materials necessary for assigned tasks including but not limited to: carpentry, drywall, painting, door hardware, roofing, ceilings, flooring and specialty detailed woodworking and trim.
  • Work with vendors and contractors to solicit pricing and quotes as directed and submit to Facilities Administration to generate a Purchase Order.
  • Check all elevators and door openers each morning before faculty and staff arrive to insure functionality. Call in any elevator not working to elevator maintenance vendor. Keep building occupants and college administration aware of any deficiencies and aware of downtimes.
  • Cut and install paneling and interior trim; hang doors, install windows, hang ceilings; build office partitions.
  • Operate backhoe, skid steer, dump truck, fork lift and other heavy equipment as needed.
  • Frame floor systems, walls, rafters and roofing as directed.
  • Build forms, pour and finish concrete, and install masonry products.
  • Build and repair desks; construct special projects to specification.
  • Assist Facilities Administration with inspections of construction projects as directed.
  • Apply paint, stain, varnish, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces.
  • Assist in storm cleanup including ice/snow removal, cutting up and removal of trees/limbs and protecting exposed facilities with tarps, plastic and plywood until repairs can be made.
  • Perform various locksmith duties. Attend trainings as needed to keep up with changing technologies. Maintain safety certifications as required by Facilities Administration.
  • Hang and finish gypsum board, install stucco/Dryvit and paint as assigned.
  • Assist General Maintenance staff with set ups on an as needed basis when requested.
  • Install and maintain automatic door openers and bring in outside vendors if needed.
  • Performs related work as assigned
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in carpentry, drywall and painting is required.
  • Preference will be given to candidates who can demonstrate through their experiences and accomplishments:

  • Possession of a valid driver license and the ability to be insurable.
  • Ability to operate light earth moving equipment includes trencher, backhoe, front-end loader for excavation and site preparation;
  • Experience working off of man lifts, ladders and scaffolding in excess of 24’;
  • Knowledge of building codes, appropriateness of materials for various applications, fittings and attachments for solid construction, and appropriate tools for tasks;
  • Ability to communicate with supervisor and co-workers;
  • Math skills to measure and determine required materials for tasks;
  • Ability to use carpenter’s hand and power tools for repairs and alterations;
