General
Experience:
One year of clerical work experience that demonstrates knowledge of spelling, arithmetic, the ability to read, understand and follow oral and written instructions, compare words and numbers quickly and accurately, perform various clerical procedures, operate office equipment, and deal with others tactfully and politely; or experience comparable to Library Assistant II in State service.
Specialized
Experience:
One year of progressively responsible experience in a library involving circulation work, stack maintenance, processing orders for library materials, posting receipt of periodicals and other materials, locating and verifying bibliographic information using standard sources; experience comparable to Library Assistant III in State service.
- Graduation from high school may be substituted for six months of General Experience.
- Successful completion of a substantially full‑time equivalent clerical, stenographic or secretarial curriculum at an accredited community college, business or technical school for a year or more may be substituted for all of the General Experience.
- Successful completion of a substantially full‑time equivalent clerical, stenographic or secretarial curriculum for less than one year may be substituted for General Experience on a month‑for‑month basis if courses included basic English, arithmetic, clerical procedures and office machines.
- Successful completion of one‑half a school year of substantially full‑time clerical, stenographic or secretarial curriculum may be substituted for six months of General Experience.
- Successful completion of one school year of substantially full‑time clerical curriculum may be substituted for one year of General Experience.
- Successful completion of a substantially full‑time equivalent library science or library technology curriculum leading to an Associate in Science or comparable degree may be substituted for required General or Specialized Experience on a year‑for‑year basis, up to a maximum of two years.
- Successful completion of a substantially full‑time equivalent library science or technology curriculum may be substituted for General or Specialized Experience on the basis of 15 semester credits for six months of experience, up to a maximum of two years.
- Education successfully completed at an accredited university in a baccalaureate program with courses in English composition and college mathematics may be substituted for General Experience on the basis of 15 semester hours for six months of experience, up to a maximum of one year.
- A master’s degree in library science or successful completion of all coursework (except thesis) leading to a master’s degree may be substituted for all required General and Specialized Experience.
- Graduate level coursework in library science may be substituted for General and/or Specialized Experience on the basis of 15 semester credits for six months of experience.
- Excess Specialized Experience may be substituted for General Experience on a month‑for‑month basis.
- Excess technical/paraprofessional experience in library work may be substituted for General or Specialized Experience on a month‑for‑month basis.
Applicants must qualify on a written test measuring knowledge and skills necessary for the duties of this class. The written test may be scheduled on a weekday or weekend at locations within the State of Hawaii. Applicants must present a pictured driver’s license, driver’s permit card, State I.D., state‑issued I.D., or military I.D. card at the test. Successful performance on the written test does not constitute a job offer.
