Position: Compliance Inspector, WM (FOG & Industrial Pretreatment)

General Statement

Performs a variety of tasks throughout the library. The combination of duties assigned to an employee in this job will be dictated by the specific needs of the library and division of workload at any given time. Accepts specific duty assignments from the supervisors responsible for the work units assigned to. Expectations for performance in each work unit are the same as for employees assigned exclusively to the unit, although the scope of duties may be more limited.

Performs job in concert with the missions and goals set forth in the Library’s Big Picture.

Essential Functions

Specific Duties and Responsibilities in Reference Services
  • Employs reference interview skills to effectively determine patrons’ specific needs for information.
  • Efficiently and effectively uses the library’s reference and nonfiction collections to find information and to guide patrons in their quests.
  • Efficiently and effectively uses the library’s reference databases, the resources in NC LIVE, and other online sources to provide information; assist patrons in using these resources.
  • Maintains periodicals display and backfiles for ease of use.
  • Provides Inter‑Library Loan assistance as needed.
  • Assists patrons in signing on and using library computers in accordance with library policy; reports any computer problems promptly to the Automation Department on the appropriate online form.
  • Creates finding aids and reading lists to assist patrons with their informational needs.
  • Assists patrons with copy machine as needed.
  • In the absence of staff in the Genealogy/Local History room, safeguards special materials and assists patrons in using those resources.
  • Assists patrons with microfilm and microfilm reader/printer.
  • Maintains the reference, leisure reading and computer areas environment so that it is neat, attractive, and well‑functioning, with ready reference materials easily accessible. Notifies the Facilities Coordinator of any maintenance needs.
  • Assigns and supervises the use of study rooms.
  • Provides referral services to outside agencies that can more effectively provide for patron needs.
  • Plans and presents programs on topics of interest for adults.
  • Conducts library tours and orientation sessions.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities in Circulation
  • Acknowledges each library patron with a pleasant greeting. Assists patrons in locating materials and using the public access catalog.
  • Meets the needs of each patron by promptly and efficiently using the circulation system to accurately record each transaction.
  • Checks inventory and overdue lists against the collection; reconciles discrepancies.
  • Efficiently registers new patrons and updates patron records according to library policy.
  • Accurately accounts for all financial transactions.
  • Understands and explains library policy clearly; handles disputes pleasantly and according to policy, requesting assistance from supervisor as needed.
  • Empties the book drops and video drops on a regular basis as assigned, including times when library is closed for extended periods.
  • Promptly and accurately places holds as requested; efficiently and accurately handles materials being transported between library facilities for checkout to library patrons; efficiently notifies patrons when requested items become available.
  • Responds to readers’ need for guidance in selecting materials of interest, using readers’ advisory skills and tools.
  • Provides Inter‑Library Loan assistance as appropriate.
  • Channels requests for materials not in the current collection to the designated selector.
  • Is conversant as to current best sellers and materials of special interest.
  • Accurately sorts and shelves materials, shelf‑reads and shifts items as needed.
  • Watches for damage and defects in materials, and follows procedures for directing items in need of repair or replacement to Technical Services.
  • Assists patrons using the copy machine as needed.
  • Assists in the stocking of the perpetual book and magazine sale, as assigned.
  • Sorts donated materials; prepares for cataloging, sale, or other dispensation.
