Electrical Engineer Senior - Decatur, GA

Job Summary

This role is responsible for new product design, cost reductions, field quality resolution, manufacturing support and sustaining engineering activities related to Electronics & Light Engines. The Senior Electronics Engineer will provide independent product ideation, electronics hardware design, firmware creation, LED selection, PCB layout, UV/Horticulture designs, PCBA drawing creation, driver selection, surge protection, emergency battery backup, and luminaire electronic controls. Responsibilities include prototyping, testing, and assembling prototypes/samples required for evaluating designs and cost reductions.

The engineer will manage many projects simultaneously while collaborating with cross functional engineering team, teach and mentor other Electronics Engineers, engage with Focus Factory and Product Management for successful on-time product launch, and apply LEAN Process methodology to improve processes.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Independently complete all electronics design activities, including selecting components, creating firmware solutions, LED driver and system controls selection, calculating parameters, working with Optics team for lumens targets, and distributing engineering data (ECNs, BOMs, drawings, PCB files, test specifications). Manage engineering documentation (ECRs, ECOs, DFMEA, calculations, drawings) using Acuity Product Life Management and Financial systems. (30%)
  • Initiate and complete product design from project charters, specification matrices, customer experience matrices, competitor reviews, and Acuity standards. Ensure designs comply with Acuity DFx before launch. (15%)
  • Manage projects and teach team members the Acuity Product Development System (PDS), ensuring project timelines and deliverables. (15%)
  • Support ABS/LEAN Transformation by leading Kaizen events, completing post-Kaizen activities, improving Electronics & Light Engine processes, testing, DFx, and documentation. (15%)
  • Submit photometry/thermal test requests, work with testing group, collaborate with mechanical design team to ensure samples meet CEM, review functional specifications, project charters, and testing reports. Perform luminaire product scaling to publish accurate specifications. (10%)
Skills and Minimum Experience Required
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering (focus in Electronics; Master’s preferred)
  • 4–5 years of experience independently creating electronics hardware designs.
  • Experience creating microprocessor firmware/code.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools, CAD (2D), Microsoft Office
    365, Minitab, SPICE, circuit analysis tools.
  • Understanding of heat transfer, thermal design, electrical isolation, EMI, design cost trade-offs, reliability testing.
  • Proficient with benchtop electronics design tools: oscilloscope, signal generator, curve tracer, power analyzer, DVM, surge/EMI generator, spectrum analyzer, illuminance flux/CCT measurement, RLC bridge, ESR meter, bench‑top sphere, power quality equipment.
  • Knowledge of electronic component selection, tolerance stack‑up, reliability analysis, simulation and system considerations.
  • Understanding of PCBA manufacturing, factory testing methods, component selection impacts, PCB material types.
  • Demonstrated LEAN & Six Sigma methodology (standard work, time study, DMAIC tools).
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in English; ability to create technical presentations.
  • Collaboration skills in cross‑functional, cross‑matrix environments.
  • Adaptability to changes within Acuity, industry, engineering, and standard work activities.
  • Knowledge of UL, DLC, Energy Star standards and testing processes for electronics and lighting products.
  • Physical ability to lift and manage products up to 50 lbs.
  • Travel: 10% (or as business situations dictate).
