General
Summary:
Provides leadership and oversees all aspects of the Cross Country (fall) and Track & Field (spring) programs, to include coaching both teams; planning, organizing, and supervising team practices; actively identifying, evaluating, and recruiting student-athletes; and working within federal, state, and local guidelines, office/department, division, and college policies and procedures; and the NCAA and athletic conference guidelines. Reports to the director of athletics and works with students, staff, officials, coaches from other institutions, parents, faculty, and both on- and off-campus constituents.
Job Functions
- Coordinates all on- and off-campus recruitment activities within the guidelines of the NCAA for both programs.
- Ensures the safety and wellness of players and works collaboratively with the Athletic Training staff on effective and holistic preventative and responsive management of injuries.
- Complies with all NCAA, conference, college, department, state, and federal regulations and policies.
- Provides leadership and coaching for the intercollegiate Cross Country and Track & Field programs.
- Supervises and coordinates the work of assistant coaches, volunteers, and graduate assistants.
- Monitors and actively encourages participants to succeed academically and represent the college with leadership and integrity, both on and off the field.
- Schedules, implements, and attends all pre-season, in-season, and post-season practices and contests.
- Schedules all team contests; coordinates special events, hosts college tournaments, and relevant camps.
- Provides financial accountability for all ASC and non-ASC functions hosted by the coach/team/department.
- Teaches within the Physical Education curriculum in areas of expertise and/or certification.
- Oversees strength, conditioning, nutritional, and financial literacy support for both Cross Country and Track & Field student-athletes.
- Prepares athletes for competition and performs post-season evaluations.
- Coordinates team travel arrangements including maintaining driver and van certification and meeting all legal requirements to drive college vehicles.
- Supervises the laundering and care of team uniforms and the care and maintenance of team facilities and equipment.
- Ensures compliance with athletic department facility contracts, scheduling priorities, and guidelines.
- Reports weekly recruiting contact data and maintains accountability for recruiting/enrollment benchmarks.
- Provides leadership and coaching for the intercollegiate Track & Field team during the spring season, including event-specific training for sprints, distance, hurdles, jumps, and throws.
- Coordinates athlete transition and training schedules between cross country and track seasons.
- Recruits student-athletes for both Cross Country and Track & Field programs, ensuring a balanced and competitive roster.
- Develops individualized training programs that meet the specific technical and physical demands of each track & field event group.
- Coordinates meet schedules, travel, and entries for indoor and outdoor track & field competitions.
- Oversees the procurement, maintenance, and inventory of track and field equipment (hurdles, blocks, implements, etc.).
- Monitors athlete academic progress and eligibility for both programs throughout the academic year.
Education: Undergraduate degree required; masters’ degree preferred.
Experience: Minimum of two years of work experience at the collegiate level with proven recruiting experience.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities- Considerable knowledge of fitness concepts and techniques, NCAA rules and regulations, and sport‑specific rules and scoring.
- Familiarity with recruiting techniques, high school coaches and athletes, and student‑athlete concerns.
- Effective interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).
- Strong computer skills in a Windows‑based environment (Microsoft: Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), including at least intermediate‑level word processing and spreadsheet development.
