Salary Range: $18.59 - $29.93/hour depending on experience
FLSA: Non‑Exempt
Purpose Of Classification: The purpose of this classification is to drive or operate sanitation trucks and manually collect refuse along a prescribed route. This is a special classification to provide incentives for those drivers who split their time between driving the vehicle and functioning as a Refuse Collector.
This classification is safety sensitive, subject to random drug testing in accordance with the County’s Drug & Alcohol Policy.
Essential FunctionsDrives semi‑automated and fully automated sanitation trucks to collect solid waste along an assigned route; positions vehicle to allow for the most efficient and effective loading or dumping of materials; monitors and adjusts pace of vehicle and collection activities to ensure timely completion of route; operates mechanisms on truck to secure and collect waste; ensures that load is properly balanced, covered, and contained;
and monitors activities of workers on the back of truck for safety.
Collects refuse along assigned route; retrieves trash bin, containers, or bags from along route; empties trash bins and containers into truck; operates container arm, lift, and compactor mechanisms as needed; and returns bins and containers to their proper place.
Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day; performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secures vehicle after use.
Provides coverage during special events/activities as needed; responds to emergency/disaster situations; provides assistance to other employees or departments; and performs other related duties as required.
Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma or GED, preferred; two years of experience driving and operating heavy trucks; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Specific License or Certification RequiredMust possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver’s License.
- Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a valid 12‑month DOT Medical Blue Card as a condition of employment for some departments.
