I. Student Academic Support
Reinforcing Subject Matter:
Working with individual students or small groups to review and reinforce concepts in specific high school subjects (e.g., Math, English, Social Studies, CTE Classes, APEX, etc). This might involve re-explaining difficult topics, guiding students through practice problems, or leading discussions.
Tutoring and Remediation:
Providing targeted tutoring for students who are struggling academically, offering alternative explanations or different approaches to learning as well as providing small group instruction.
Assisting with Projects and Assignments:
Helping students break down large projects, organize their work, research information, and complete assignments. This can include guidance on essay writing, or presentations.
Study Skills and Organization:
Teaching and reinforcing effective study habits, time management, note-taking strategies, and organizational skills that are crucial for students at DTSE to be successful.
Test Preparation:
Assisting students in preparing for quizzes, tests, and standardized exams, which may involve reviewing material, practicing questions, and providing strategies for test‑taking.
Technology Integration:
Supporting students in using APEX, online learning platforms, research tools, and other digital resources relevant to their coursework.
Preparing Instructional Materials:
Assisting the teacher in creating and organizing various instructional materials, such as handouts, worksheets, visual aids, lab setups, and presentation slides. This might involve using specialized software or equipment.
Classroom Management:
Helping to maintain a positive and orderly learning environment, monitoring student behavior, and reinforcing classroom rules and procedures. This often involves proactive strategies for engagement rather than just reactive discipline.
Clerical and Administrative Tasks:
Performing a range of administrative duties, including:
Maintaining student records (attendance, grades, credits, progress reports).
Filing and organizing documents.
Duplicating and distributing materials.
Setting up and operating classroom technology.
Supervision:
Supervising students in various settings, including the classroom, hallways, cafeteria, incentive gym time and during extracurricular activities or field trips.
Adapting Materials:
Assisting teachers in adapting or modifying curriculum materials to meet the diverse learning needs of students, including those with special education plans or English language learners. This would be especially important this year, since DTSE will no longer have an ELL teacher that comes over from DCHS.
Behavioral Interventions:
Assisting with the implementation of behavior management plans and strategies for students with behavioral challenges.
Transition Support:
Helping students develop skills for post‑secondary education.
In a high school setting, the IA's role is crucial in ensuring that all students receive the individualized attention and support they need to succeed in their academic pursuits and prepare for their future.
