Overview
Instructor/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Teaching Assistant Professor, Department of Chemistry, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite applications for up to two positions in General Chemistry.
Responsibilities- Preparing and presenting content in lecture and laboratory courses in General Chemistry.
- Supervising and mentoring teaching assistants, holding office hours, writing and grading examinations, and assigning grades.
- Coordinating with the Associate Director of Teaching Labs and lab staff about general chemistry lab courses and experiments.
- Attending General Chemistry area meetings and serving on departmental and University-wide committees as needed.
- Revising course content and syllabi to meet General Education certification and recertification.
- Developing content and teaching online General Chemistry courses that fulfill the University online course certification requirement.
- Serving on one departmental committee per year.
Duties for Senior Lecturer and Teaching Assistant Professor positions include substantial additions, improvements, or other contributions to the chemistry curriculum, such as new course development, study abroad experiences, and innovative teaching methods that improve student learning.
Duties for the Teaching Assistant Professor position also include substantial educational and technical research in the chemical sciences and supervision and mentorship of undergraduate researchers.
QualificationsInstructor rank: (i) hold a Master’s degree in chemistry or a closely related field and (ii) demonstrated potential for high-quality college or university-level teaching in chemistry. (iii) Record of teaching effectiveness that includes:
Lecturer rank: (i) hold a PhD in chemistry or a closely related field and (ii) demonstrated potential for high-quality college or university-level teaching in chemistry. (iii) Record of teaching effectiveness with the same elements as above.
Senior Lecturer rank: (i) hold a PhD in chemistry or a closely related field, (ii) demonstrated effectiveness in university-level teaching in chemistry, and (iii) record of teaching effectiveness with the same elements as above.
(iv) Experience in curriculum development or current educational technologies. Interest in creating new and innovative course materials and experiments is advantageous.
Teaching Assistant Professor rank: (i) hold a PhD in chemistry or a closely related field, (ii) demonstrated potential for high-quality college or university-level teaching in chemistry, and (iii) strong track record of research in chemistry or chemical education as evidenced by publications and invited talks. Candidates should have an interest in developing a research program in chemistry or chemical education alongside teaching and pedagogical duties.
Salaryand Appointment Information
The positions are on a 9-month service basis, with an early start date of Aug 1, 2026. Appointments are renewable yearly based on funding and performance. Renewed appointments are on a 9-month basis (Aug 16–May 15). 9-month salary ranges:
- Instructor or Lecturer: $60,000–$63,000
- Senior Lecturer: $65,000–$68,000
- Teaching Assistant Professor: $65,000–$68,000
Courses are primarily in-person on the Urbana-Champaign campus, with potential online teaching as needed. The positions are eligible for sponsorship except for sponsorship of a new H1B petition that would incur a $100,000 fee.
