Decatur Public School District, established in 1865 in Illinois, serves approximately 8,700 students across a diverse set of learning environments. The District operates one pre-kindergarten/early learning center, ten K-6 elementary schools, four K-8 schools, one middle school, two high schools, and K-12 alternative and social-emotional programs. Three facilities are magnet schools, including a Pre-K-8 Montessori school, and families may apply to schools of choice such as a STEM Academy, a candidate International Baccalaureate school, and a fine arts program.

The District also serves as the administrative agent for the Macon-Piatt Special Education District, reflecting a strong commitment to inclusive education and specialized services.

Role Description

The Teacher role is a full-time, on-site position located in Decatur, IL. The Teacher will plan and deliver standards-based instruction, create engaging lesson plans, and facilitate learning for students with diverse academic and social-emotional needs. Daily responsibilities include assessing student progress, providing timely feedback, differentiating instruction, and maintaining accurate records of grades and attendance. The Teacher will collaborate with colleagues, support staff, and families to promote student success, participate in professional development, and contribute to a positive, safe, and inclusive school climate.

Additional duties may include supervising student activities, supporting school-wide initiatives, and adhering to District policies and state education guidelines.

Qualifications
  • Demonstrated skills in Lesson Planning and Teaching to design and deliver effective, standards-aligned instruction.
  • Strong foundation in Education and Training to support student growth and apply best practices in classroom management and pedagogy.
  • Effective Communication skills for interacting with students, families, colleagues, and administrators in a clear, respectful, and collaborative manner.
  • Relevant state teaching certification or licensure (Illinois Professional Educator License or eligibility to obtain it).
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Ability to work with diverse student populations, including students with special education needs, in an inclusive setting.
  • Strong organizational skills, reliability, and ability to manage multiple classroom responsibilities and deadlines.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development and District initiatives to enhance instructional practice.
