Role: Design Engineer 4 – Heavy Fabrications / Large Mining Trucks
Location: Decatur, IL – On-Site
Pay: $55–$56/hr (W2)
Duration: 12-month contract-option to go internal
Epitec is seeking a skilled Design Engineer to support heavy fabrication and structural component design for rigid-frame Large Mining Trucks s position offers exposure to large-scale mechanical systems, casting development, manufacturing processes, and new product integration inside a world-class engineering organization.
What You’ll Do- Lead design activities for steering arms/linkages, axles, and heavy fabricated structures for Large Mining Trucks
- Create 3D models, detailed drawings, and design concepts
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) and design-for-manufacturing work at the Decatur facility
- Collaborate with engineering teams across Decatur, Acuña, and global partners
- Participate in design, manufacturing, and quality-improvement meetings
- Support BIQ deployment, CPI initiatives, and factory troubleshooting
- Assist factory and supplier collaboration efforts for heavy fabrications
- Review drawings, perform markups, and provide design corrections
- Conduct basic FEA as needed to support design decisions
Experience: 8+ years (internships accepted)
Education: BS in Mechanical, Agricultural, or Civil Engineering
- Strong 3D modeling experience
- Metallic parts fabrication/manufacturing knowledge
- Excellent communication skills
Required:
- CAD proficiency (Creo, Solid Works, or similar)
- Understanding of welding processes
- Knowledge of metallic part manufacturing (burn-to-shape, forming, stamping)
- Basic metal casting principles
- Strong written and verbal communication
Desired:
- FEA tools (Creo Simulate, ANSYS, Nastran)
- Tooling design knowledge
- Machining process understanding
Required:
- Ability to give/receive feedback
- Engineering curiosity and problem-solving mindset
Bonus:
- Ability to lead/mentor team members
- Ability to research and investigate beyond typical resources

Work Environment- On-Site, full-time in Decatur, IL
- Office + shop-floor exposure (PPE provided)
- Hours:
7AM–4PM or 8AM–5PM, Monday–Friday - Caterpillar provides PPE, hardware, and electronics
- Travel up to 25% possible (Canada, Mexico)
