Job Description
UL is seeking an experienced AI/ML Assurance Expert to lead our artificial intelligence initiatives across automotive, medical, industrial, robotics, consumer and sectors. This strategic leadership role is responsible for defining and executing compliance and assurance programs to ensure AI systems are trustworthy, compliant, and aligned with ethical, regulatory, and organizational standards.
The role includes assessing AI models for fairness, transparency, robustness, and security, implementing governance frameworks to mitigate risks, and consulting with clients on AI integration into products and processes.
Responsibilities- Strategic Leadership:
Develop and drive AI assurance strategies across automotive, medical, industrial, robotics, consumer and aerospace industries. Drive integration of AI/ML into safety-critical systems (Product Development Lifecycle, Functional Safety, Cybersecurity, SOTIF) - Governance & Compliance:
Establish and maintain AI governance frameworks and assurance processes to ensure adherence to global standards (GDPR, EU AI Act, ISO, UL AI standards). - Client Engagement:
Collaborate with clients to deliver AI-enabled solutions that are compliant with global AI regulatory frameworks. - Risk & Ethical Oversight:
Evaluate AI systems for compliance, fairness, and ethical considerations; stay ahead of evolving regulatory and industry standards. - Lifecycle Management:
Create governance structures for AI lifecycle management, including risk assessments and documentation. - Reporting & Communication:
Prepare assurance reports for stakeholders and regulatory bodies; communicate AI risks and findings to technical and non-technical audiences. - Advisory & Mentorship:
Advise on best practices for safe and responsible AI deployment; mentor internal teams on emerging AI technologies and ethical standards.
- Lead business development activities defining Statements of Work (SOWs), providing budgetary estimates, and submitting full proposals for client-funded projects. Leverage industry experience and network to win projects and build the business.
- Lead client programs, including major/large-scale client programs, by interacting regularly with clients in technical program meetings and project reviews. Address client concerns and to resolve client issues. Provide expert technical leadership and guidance to clients in reference to safety, security, process framework, and related technical fields. Projects may include regular travel to client sites and to other UL locations.
- Contribute to the strategic direction of the business by providing technical and market expertise to management planning and report-out activities.
- Contribute to the development of UL technical standards and other relevant technical standards (from ISO, IEC, IEEE, SAE, etc.) by direct participation as member of standards committees.
- Integrate continuous improvement and safety culture in all aspects of the job.
- Education:
Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Science, or related field with a focus on AI/ML technologies. - Experience:
- 5+ years in AI/ML development, deployment, risk management, compliance, and governance roles.
- Implementation Experience in AI/ML product development and lifecycle management, dataset lifecycle and tools.
- Proven track record in implementing AI assurance frameworks and regulatory compliance.
- Exposure to regulated industries and safety-critical environments
- Technical Expertise:
- Strong understanding of AI/ML technologies and their applications across industries.
- Familiarity with regulatory frameworks (EU AI Act, ISO/IEC 42001).
- Knowledge and understanding of UL 3115, ISO/PAS 8800 and relevant safety and governance standards.
- Knowledge of AI ethics, fairness, and bias mitigation techniques and applicable standards.
- 10+ Years experience in designing and developing embedded system solutions including systems electronics hardware design
- Experience in safety related role in functional safety
- Safety Analysis knowledge including HARA, HIRE, FTA, FMEA, FMEDA, STPA etc.
- Experience working with ISO 61508, ISO 26262, ISO 21448, and relevant safety standards
- Experience with ISO 21434, Cybersecurity Management Systems (CSMS), Automotive Cybersecurity Risk Management, Continuous Cybersecurity Activities (Incident Response, Cybersecurity Monitoring)
- Experience with ISO 24089, Software Update Management Systems (SUMS), including experience with vehicle software update campaigns and securing vehicle infrastructure related to software updates.
- Experience in EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and ISA/IEC 62443 Series of Standards
