Go Green Skokie is a community-driven organization dedicated to promoting environmentally sustainable actions in Skokie. Founded in 2017, the organization collaborates with local residents, businesses, and various institutions to accelerate climate action in alignment with the Village’s Sustainability Plan. Some of its initiatives include organizing community events, advocating for eco-friendly policies, removing invasive plants, adopting public green spaces, and promoting composting programs.
Go Green Skokie is committed to education, advocacy, and collaborative environmental efforts to create a greener and more sustainable community.
This is a temporary on-site position for City Nature Challenge Volunteer located in Skokie, Illinois, USA. Volunteers will assist in promoting community participation in conservation activities, raise awareness about biodiversity, and facilitate citizen science-based initiatives. Responsibilities include coordinating nature walks, collecting and recording data about local flora and fauna, and engaging with community members. Volunteers will collaborate with local government, schools, and other local organizations to inspire action and education around nature conservation.
Here are brief role descriptions (approx. hours include training and team coordination for each role).
- Trainer / iNat Expert:Help new users set up the iNaturalist app, teach them how to take high‑quality photos, and explain how to mark observations as "captive/cultivated". Refresh or learn about iNaturalist and quality observations the week of March 15
and train others through May 10 (approx. 3‑5 hours). - Data Collector:Head into the field (parks, neighborhoods, or backyards) to photograph wild organisms and upload them to the challenge project between April 24-27 (approx. 2‑3 hours).
- Bioblitz Guide:Lead small groups on nature walks, pointing out key species and discussing local ecology and biology between
April 24-27
(approx. 2‑3 hours). - Species Identifier:Work remotely or at "" to review observations and help move them toward Research Gradestatus by providing accurate identifications between April 28 - May 10
(approx. 2‑3 hours). - Data Presenter:Analyze challenge results and create engaging graphics, reels, or reports to share our village’s impact with the community between May 10-13

- Passion for nature conservation, environmental sustainability, and community engagement
- Ability to work collaboratively within teams and independently
- Strong skills in communication and organization
- Interest and some familiarity in data collection (photography, sound recordings)
- Familiarity with biodiversity assessment tools or citizen science projects is a plus
- Proficiency in event planning, public outreach, and volunteer coordination is a plus
- Experience in environmental education or nonprofit projects is an advantage
- Flexibility to work outdoors and adapt to various schedules during community events
