The nurse functions as a resource for the assigned Division within the Department of Surgery. Primary responsibility of the position is to ensure that safe, quality, efficient health care delivery is provided to patients. This nurse will serve as a patient service coordinator within the Division and provide direct nursing services for physicians to which he/she is assigned.

Responsibilities- 80% Nursing Duties
- Provides clinic nursing care and delegates duties to LPNs and MAs.
- Obtains patient histories, assists with examinations, administers medications, provides wound care, and documents nursing functions.
- Performs clinic laboratory and procedural testing according to protocols; reports findings to the physician.
- Assists with procedures and sets up or completes procedures under the direction of the MD, APN, or PA.
- Develops and implements patient plans of care with the MD, APN, and/or PA.
- Coordinates delivery of patient plans of care and organizes clinic patient flow to maximize productivity and minimize wait times.
- Schedules follow‑up patient activities, including radiology studies, surgical procedures, and other testing ordered by the MD, APN, or PA.
- Prepares for upcoming clinics by obtaining history, radiologic studies, laboratory results, and operative reports as appropriate.
- Communicates with call center, patients, families, and other healthcare professionals.
- Uses critical thinking skills to triage patient care priorities for phone calls and needs.
- Utilizes and maintains equipment used in assessment and treatment of patients.
- Ensures accurate, current, and safe nursing procedures through supervision of clinical personnel.
- Acts as liaison between healthcare facilities and other specialty agencies.
- Functions as a primary nurse or back‑up nurse as directed; follows direction of the primary nurse and physician when acting as back‑up.
- Serves as a resource to departmental staff and performs duties in other divisions as assigned by the Nurse Administrator.
- 10% Education
- Provides patient teaching and participates in staff and community education programs.
- Provides orientation to daily clinic activities and training for nursing personnel, students, and residents.
- Assists with instruction of secretaries in the provision of patient activities.
- Functions as resource person for general public requesting information regarding the assigned Division and SIU Department of Surgery.
- Completes annual training and competencies.
- 5% Administrative Duties
- Completes charge tickets for nursing services provided in the clinic.
- Ensures that tests and surgeries are pre‑certified according to insurance requirements if necessary.
- Participates in development of policies, procedures, and systems to support patient safety and quality care.
- Maintains or delegates inventory of adequate supplies necessary for daily clinic activities and makes recommendations to the Charge Nurse for equipment, commodities, and non‑routine supplies.
- Attends and participates in departmental/divisional staff meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- 5% Research Duties
- Assists with planning and implementation of research projects related to patient care.
- Follows research protocols when conducting patient research, including obtaining informed consent and documenting patient care as directed.
- Collects and analyzes data and assists with publishing results as needed.
- Attends SCHRIS training and maintains qualifications to participate in research, if applicable.
- Licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse in Illinois.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work with others as a member of a multidisciplinary team.

- Out‑of‑state applicants must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of their start date.
