SUMMARY
Completes repairs, improvements, construction and maintenance of Park District grounds, gardens, facilities, and buildings. Maintains and operates equipment and completes landscaping.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSABILITIES- Prepares beds and sites, plants, trims, prunes, mulches, waters, weeds, stakes, fertilizes, rakes, shovels, digs, grades, back fills and levels soil to complete and maintain horticultural projects
- Installs, prunes, waters, mulches, stakes, transplants and removes plant, turf, shrub, flower and tree materials
- Operate vehicles, trailers, mowing and trimming equipment, chainsaws, wood chippers, tillers, hand and power tools and other maintenance and mechanical equipment in the maintenance of the parks and garden areas.
- May include hauling soil, mulch, compost, gravel, etc.
- May occasionally include plowing snow.
- Performs bed preparation, including timber, ledging and border installation, excavation, drainage installation, soil amendment, planting, mulching and weed control
- Loads, unloads and delivers equipment and supplies, as needed
- Maintain all equipment by cleaning, adjusting, greasing, checking fluids and air, and replacing parts as needed.
- Perform repair on buildings, including routine maintenance such as painting, sweeping, mopping, etc.
- Operate equipment in the repair of waterlines, sewer lines, and other maintenance areas.
- Repair park benches, tables, and other park equipment.
- Rake leaves, trim trees, and shovel sidewalks. Clean areas of debris or litter.
- Assist other supervisors and departments in the performance of construction and maintenance activities.
- Cleans work site when projects are completed
- Attends work on a regular basis
- Inspect grounds and report conditions to supervisor.
- Treat public complaints and concerns with the utmost attention. Be courteous in all cases.
- Performs the job safely and in compliance with District policies, procedures, work and safety rules, and the employee handbook
- Maintains a clean and organized work environment
- Additional functions may be essential
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCELess than a high school education; or up to one month related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSValid Illinois Class "D" Driver's License;
Valid Illinois Pesticide Public Operator License or valid Illinois Applicator License in turf and/or ornamentals preferred.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required climb or balance, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
