Job Overview
Dockworker position responsible for efficient loading and unloading of freight, ensuring safety and accurate delivery across Old Dominion network.
Job SummaryEfficiently load and unload freight onto trailers using forklifts, pallet jacks, or manual methods, following DOT guidelines. Secure freight with airbags, straps, and other tools to prevent damage.
Primary Responsibilities- Load and unload freight on trailers using motorized forklift, pallet jack, or manual techniques.
- Use various loading techniques (tight loading, cross loading) and transport freight continuously throughout the service center.
- Monitor freight shipment locations with Dock Yard Management System.
- Read and interpret shipping labels, shipping orders, city stripping manifests, freight bills, overage/damage reports, and other exception forms.
- Rewrap, stack, and hand‑load freight as necessary to maintain trailer quality.
- Secure freight inside trailers using pallets, straps, rope, or cardboard.
- Maintain fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented workflow and frequent communication with service‑center personnel.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Knowledge of safe and efficient lifting & transporting procedures.
- Familiarity with loading techniques and freight‑movement forms (shipping orders, manifests, bills, reports).
- Proficiency with Dock Yard Management System and handheld tablet operations.
- Availability to work all required shifts to meet customer pickup and delivery schedules.
- Strong communication skills in English.
Must be able to stand for up to 8 hours per shift on non‑forgiving surfaces, sit on forklifts for up to 8 hours, walk, bend, stoop, kneel, climb, push, pull, and lift freight weighing up to 100lbs (or larger when using equipment). Requires ability to work in extreme temperatures, noisy & odor‑laden environments, and vary shift times.
ScheduleWork days:
Monday–Friday.
Shifts:
AM/PM. Schedules may change based on job level.
$19.05–$33.05 per hour, dependent on location, experience, and market conditions.
