The Director of Safety and Security provides culturally sensitive leadership and supervision for all areas of safety and security on a residential college campus. Responsibilities include supervising safety personnel and budget, security for all campus property, parking administration, safety inspections, emergency response, training, risk management, and federal reporting/disclosure mandates.

Salary range: $60,000 - $78,900

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide safety, risk management, and emergency response leadership to the College
    • Serve as a strategic thought partner to the Vice President for Finance and Administration on issues of campus safety and security
    • Participate in the Threat Assessment Team and Title IX Team
    • Participate in the Operational Risk Task Force, the Emergency Response Team, and the Emergency Communications Team
    • Collaborate with Student Life on initiatives supporting student safety and well‑being
    • Coordinate the operation of an Emergency Command Center and serve as the Emergency Coordinator for disaster events
    • Serve as a liaison and maintain excellent working relationships with the Decorah Police Department, Winneshiek County Sheriff's Office, Decorah Fire Department, and Winneshiek County Emergency Management
  • Direct the activities of the Campus Safety department
    • Supervise the Campus Responders to ensure effective 24/7 provision of safety and security services
    • Respond to routine and emergency calls for service
    • Be available to provide advice and direction for security officers on other working shifts
    • Conduct and/or coordinate investigations into criminal acts or code of conduct violations
    • Respond to emergent safety and security situations, including alcohol or drug violations, life safety concerns, and situations connected to psychological or sexual assault crises
    • Develop and provide training for officers in handling a wide variety of situations, including sexual abuse and harassing conduct issues, with an emphasis on student development and engagement
    • Collaborate with Facilities personnel for key control, fire safety, lighting and grounds safety issues, including regular inspections of all buildings, noting safety and security deficiencies and lockup of buildings
    • Participate in the resolution of student grievances, challenges, and complaints to foster good relationships among the Safety and Security and Student Engagement departments through conflict resolution skills
    • Manage the parking program, including the administration of the parking permits; enforcement and assignment systems; decisions related to policies on the use of parking lots; resolving parking issues on campus
    • Develop safety and security resources for faculty/staff, students/student groups and community organizations that interact with the campus community
  • Communicate important safety, security, and emergency response information to campus
    • Maintain the safety and security website with relevant and current information
    • Conduct trainings and tabletop exercises to prepare campus stakeholders for emergency response
    • Complete the annual crime and fire statistics report for Clery Act compliance, in collaboration with Title IX and Student Life
    • Be the campus expert on and ensure compliance with the Campus Security Act, Drug Free School Act, Hate Crime Statistics Act, and other state and federal crime reporting mandates by gathering statistical data and providing crime prevention information and summaries to the campus community

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise six full‑time staff employees providing 24/7 campus safety coverage
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND SKILLS
  • Bachelor's degree required, preferably in law enforcement, criminal justice, student development or a related field;
    Master’s and/or relevant certification in higher education safety and security desirable
  • Four years of progressively responsible management/supervisory experience in higher education law enforcement or public safety
