The Controller is responsible for overseeing all accounting and financial operations for the organization, ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and supporting strategic business decisions. This role plays a critical part in managing construction-specific accounting functions, including job costing, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, cash flow management, and project financial analysis. The Controller will partner closely with executive leadership and operations teams to drive profitability and support the company's continued growth.
- Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and month-end close processes.
- Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP.
- Develop and maintain financial reporting packages for executive leadership.
- Monitor company cash flow and prepare cash forecasts to support operational needs.
- Manage and review job costing to ensure accurate project financial reporting.
- Prepare and analyze Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and percentage-of-completion reporting.
- Monitor project budgets, costs, and profitability, identifying variances and recommending corrective actions.
- Partner with project managers and operations leaders to review project financial performance.
- Ensure proper revenue recognition practices are followed for construction contracts.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and periodic financial forecasting activities.
- Provide financial analysis and strategic recommendations to support business planning and decision-making.
- Develop key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure operational and financial performance.
- Supervise and mentor accounting staff, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
- Establish and maintain effective internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Coordinate annual audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, tax advisors, and banking partners.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company policies and procedures.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes, reporting efficiencies, and financial systems.
- Implement best practices to enhance accuracy, transparency, and operational effectiveness.
- Support system implementations, upgrades, and integrations as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
- Previous experience in the construction industry required.
- Strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including job costing and WIP reporting.
- Experience managing month-end close and preparing financial statements.
- Knowledge of GAAP and internal control frameworks.
- Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills.
- Experience working with construction accounting software such as Sage 300 CRE, Vista by Viewpoint, CMiC, Procore, or Foundation.
- Experience supporting bonding and banking relationships.
- Familiarity with multi-entity or multi-state operations.
