The Assistant Chief of Logistics and Fleet Services is responsible for the strategic leadership, management, and oversight of the department’s logistics, fleet maintenance, apparatus readiness, facilities coordination, inventory control, procurement support, and operational resource management functions. This position ensures that all emergency response vehicles, equipment, supplies, and support systems are maintained in a constant state of readiness to support safe and effective emergency operations.
The Assistant Chief coordinates long-term fleet replacement planning, budget development, vendor and contract management, regulatory compliance, and interdivisional collaboration to enhance operational efficiency and organizational sustainability. This role also provides leadership in emergency preparedness, disaster response logistics, and special projects while supervising personnel assigned to logistics and fleet operations and promoting accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement throughout the division. The employee works under the general direction of the Deputy Fire Chief.
- Directs and oversees all logistics, fleet services, and support operations for the department.
- Manages the procurement process for apparatus, vehicles, equipment, supplies, technology, uniforms, and specialized emergency response resources.
- Develops, administers, and monitors contracts with vendors, service providers, maintenance companies, and contractors to ensure compliance, performance, and cost effectiveness.
- Coordinates fleet management activities for all emergency response apparatus, specialty vehicles, and staff vehicles, including maintenance scheduling, repairs, inspections, replacement planning, and lifecycle management.
- Oversees facilities management functions including maintenance, repairs, renovations, capital improvement projects, and coordination with internal departments and external contractors.
- Ensures all department facilities, apparatus, and equipment remain operationally ready and compliant with applicable safety, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
- Develops and manages division budgets related to logistics, fleet operations, facilities, maintenance, procurement, and capital assets.
- Coordinates inventory management and accountability systems for department equipment, supplies, tools, medical equipment, and emergency response assets.
- Supervises and evaluates personnel assigned to logistics, fleet, facilities, and support services operations.
- Establishes preventive maintenance programs for apparatus, equipment, and facilities to maximize operational readiness and asset longevity.
- Coordinates specification development, purchasing, testing, acceptance, and deployment of new apparatus, vehicles, and equipment.
- Serves as liaison with manufacturers, vendors, contractors, municipal departments, and regulatory agencies regarding logistics and fleet-related operations.
- Monitors compliance with local, state, and federal purchasing requirements, fleet regulations, environmental standards, and safety guidelines.
- Supports emergency operations and disaster response activities through resource coordination, deployment logistics, and continuity planning.
- Analyzes operational data and prepares reports related to fleet utilization, maintenance costs, procurement activities, facility needs, and asset management.
- Participates in strategic planning initiatives related to fleet replacement schedules, infrastructure improvements, and operational support services.
- Recommends and implements process improvements, technological enhancements, and best practices related to logistics and fleet operations.
- Ensures accountability and proper documentation for all department assets, maintenance records, contracts, warranties, and purchasing activities.
- Responds to emergencies, major incidents, and disaster events as required in support of departmental operations.
