EBP Audit Manager
We are seeking an experienced Employee Benefit Plan (EBP) Audit Manager to lead and manage audits of ERISA-regulated retirement plans, including 401(k) and 403(b) plans. This role is responsible for the overall planning, execution, and delivery of high-quality employee benefit plan audit and attestation engagements. The EBP Audit Manager will serve as a primary client contact, ensure compliance with applicable regulations and professional standards, mentor audit staff, and support the growth of the employee benefit plan practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan, manage, and perform financial statement audits and ERISA compliance testing for employee benefit plans in accordance with GAAS, ERISA, DOL, and AICPA standards
- Lead engagements from planning through issuance of audit reports, including risk assessments and audit strategies
- Review audit work papers, financial statements, disclosures, and reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance
Team Leadership and Development
- Supervise, coach, and mentor audit staff and seniors throughout engagements
- Provide technical guidance, training, and timely performance feedback
- Ensure engagement teams meet quality, deadline, and professional standards
Client and Third-Party Coordination
- Serve as the primary point of contact for plan sponsors, trustees, recordkeepers, and third-party administrators
- Coordinate information requests and resolve audit and compliance issues efficiently
- Present audit findings, required communications, and recommendations to clients
Risk Management and Compliance
- Evaluate internal controls and plan operations to identify audit and compliance risks
- Design and perform appropriate tests of controls and substantive procedures
- Communicate identified findings, compliance exceptions, and corrective action recommendations
Engagement and Practice Management
- Manage engagement budgets, timelines, and staffing requirements
- Track and communicate engagement status, risks, and issues to partners and clients
- Stay current on ERISA, DOL guidance, IRS regulations, GAAP, and auditing standards affecting employee benefit plans
- Support business development activities, including proposal assistance and relationship building
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA license required
- Minimum of five years of experience auditing employee benefit plans, including 401(k) and 403(b) plans
- Proven experience in a senior, in-charge, or manager role leading EBP audit engagements
Technical and Professional Skills
- Strong knowledge of employee benefit plan operations, including eligibility, contributions, vesting, distributions, participant loans, and plan investments
- Deep understanding of ERISA requirements and common audit and compliance issues
- Experience managing multiple engagements and delivering high-quality client service within budget and deadline constraints
- Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to clearly explain technical matters to clients and stakeholders
Additional Requirements
- Proficiency with audit software and Microsoft Office
- Experience with specialized EBP audit tools and 401(k) testing software is a plus
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
- Willingness to travel to client sites as needed
